2.5 admin backend annoying

Where are the text editing features “b”, “i”, “link” for bold, italic, link. Am I missing something basic here or doe I need to write in HTML ?

Interestingly, this reply box for this posting contains these features.. aaaarhhh

It would be nice to think that a WordPress “official” was reading these comments and giving some feedback – or listening to our calls to have a “go back to classic view” option on the backend.

Huzzah! So too have I ?? Whether we get any response is anyone’s guess. Does anyone think it was just an elaborate and rather long-lasting April Fool’s joke? That’s the only reason I can see for it!

Here is what I find annoying:

The permalink saves as soon as you start typing. Why? Since I never choose a title until I’ve written the post, now I have to go edit it. This was never an issue before.

I miss being able to see the time of day on posts in Manage Posts. I future post several posts per day, and need to make sure they’re spaced apart.

I agree that having to scroll to categories is annoying. And counterintuitive.

And the delete button is next to the save button in Edit Post. I thought that was a huge no-no?

I am not worldly in the way of php-fu, and my css abilities are that of a an infant with a handful of crayolas, but the organization and variable width limitations in the Write>Post and Write>Page areas, in addition to the column arrangement change baffles me. The categorical selection, timestamp, password, comment and ping selections could all easily fit into the very nice and clean post-status window to the right.

Because of my limitations in changing this arrangement, I’m forced to depend on the opportunities of people with far more ability than I to help make me a happy blogger again. It’s not to say that I wouldn’t change it myself, but I am simply not far enough along in my education for editing this medium to attempt a self-fix. As i am positive i am simply reiterating the concerns and critiques of others I’ll simply pray someone writes a cool 2.3.3 Admin theme for 2.5 ??

I did a bit of CSS-fu to move the categories. I added this to the bottom of global.css:

#categorydiv { float: right; clear: right; width: 220px; position: relative; right: -250px; top: -520px; z-index: 10; background: #fff; }
#tagsdiv, #category-tabs, #category-adder { display: none; }
#categories-all { height: 20em; margin-left: 0; border: none; }

Unfortunately that covers up the Related list, but I can’t bring myself to care. It also turns off the tags panel (as I mentioned, I don’t use those). And I wouldn’t count on it working in IE.

It’s a stopgap at best.

I upgraded to 2.5, thinking blindly that it would just be better, as all / most previous wordpress upgrades have been.

I get to the new admin pages, and they are horrible. Each and every task has been made harder and stupider.

The admin pages were the guts the the blog, the part that worked fast, easy and tons of settings. It didn’t matter that the design was utilitarian, it was fast and clean and no-one but you saw it. Now the admin pages are designed for a screen resolution not known to man, and I don’t like having to scroll through it.

I don’t want to have to revert to last weekend’s backups to fix this.

It took a couple of days to get used to the new layout/color scheme.

No, but you might have to hold down the shift key while you refresh the Write screen, if your browser had the old CSS file cached.

Sapphire nails my perception. The new admin appears to be for casual bloggers does not consider high-volume blogs. Our site includes a few active blogs. I reverted to 2.3.3 for the high-volume one, because that editor found himself having to expend more scrolls and clicks in 2.5, significantly slowing him down (and he doesn’t have to use the uploader much).

For the others (one or so posts per day or so), I moved and edited a few things in edit-form-advanced.php.

I still hate the uploader hijacking the page. And when I click to insert the code there’s a brief moment of panic about where the cursor might have been when.

Another major complaint my editor had was not having drafts listed on the Write page.

I can’t believe that someone thought it was a good idea to release 2.5. It’s just *awful*.

The developers have confused “simple to look at” with “simple to use”. The pale colours make it difficult to quickly pick out different parts of the interface, certain key tasks take more clicks, I have to scroll down to the bottom of the page to edit categories, etc… clicking “Save” seems to randomly take me to a different page each time I click it.

I really wish I hadn’t “upgraded” and have started actively warning people away from WP, which is a real shame.

One thing that really threw me… am I the only one who thinks that it’s more intuitive to go to Manage – Media Library to add media to the library, rather than doing it via the posting page? This would particularly make sense if there are media you’re planning to use in multiple posts. I don’t see why it’d hurt to have the option in *both* places…

To be honest i like the new look dashboard, though it took me a while to get the hang of it.

For me the biggest issues is the widgets. Drag and Drop widgets were my fave, and now they’re gone. I used to have 5 or 6 text widgets whgich would go in rotation as things changed. I can’t do that anymore since it only allows me to edit 1 widget at a time, and as soon as i remove it from the side bar it’s deleted.

I’d move back to 2.3, only i don’t know how. I’m just hoping the next update fixes this, otherwise i’ll have to start looking for another platform
