Why upgrade?

  • I have a fairly simple but busy (400 hits/day) site running on WP 2.2 It provides program notices for our local film society (1300 members).

    I was thinking of upgrading but I see many tales of woe, and my site is presently doing everything I want of it. Why should I upgrade? On the basis “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” surely I would be smarter just leaving it to run just as it is?

    Is there any good reason to want to upgrade?

    Smarter? I guess that’s relative. You just have not had the misfortune of being a target yet. You may never be. You might be tomorrow. …Lots of script kiddies with ‘bots out there. Nothing says you have to upgrade. Read all the available material on why your version is unsafe, and why WordPress releases regular security updates and improvements, and then use that knowledge to make an informed decision on whether or not you want to balance the total risk of loosing control of your blog and database, against your current comfort level. That’s pretty much it.

    If not for the security of your own blog — how about for the rest of the people you happen to share the web with?

    Well, thank you for those responses, it helps me considerably.

    I will not be rushing into it, but I will certainly get a backup arrangement ready to roll in case the site is hacked.

    Totally, non-wordpress related. Sort of.

    I caught a flash (it says… “Benjamin Flesch = definitely rocks.>”) out of the corner of my eye in the top left of the browser when that link (mybeni.rootzilla.de ) loaded, so I looked at the source code just for grins. That’s just what I got. I’m still grinnin’.
