I installed WordFence as a firewall. After the scan, it said I ad 2136 unknown files. The message is the same for all of the files. Below is an example.

    Filename: wp-admin/user/wp-load.php
    File Type: Core
Details: This file is in a WordPress core location but is not distributed with this version of WordPress. This scan often includes files left over from a previous WordPress version, but it may also find files added by another plugin, files added by your host, or malicious files added by an attacker.

I would like to delete the files – since there is an option for that, but I am a bit scared to do that.

    Thanks,
    Angela

Hi @angela-van-breemen, thanks for getting in touch.

2136 is quite a lot of files to deal with individually, although it’s not unheard of for a caching plugin or left-over backup/update files being left behind to result in a situation like you’re seeing.

I’d like to take a quick look for you if that’s alright? Please ensure all of your plugins and the WordPress installation is up-to-date and send a diagnostic report to wftest @ wordfence . com. You can find the link to do so at the top of the Wordfence Tools > Diagnostics page. Then click on “Send Report by Email”. Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it.

Note: For the fastest response time, please make sure and add any information or questions directly to this topic and not the email address above unless asked.

    Thanks,

    Peter.

Thanks for your message. I downloaded all the WordPress public files to my local hard drive. Then, I also backed up the website and saved the backup on the cloud.

Then I used Wordfence to delete all the files, which appeared to be old WordPress files.

    It worked.

Each time I run the scan, it shows the site is clean.

Thanks for your response, and your offer to assist. Thankfully, all is well.

    Cheers,
    Angela

That’s perfect @angela-van-breemen and thanks for letting me know. I did suspect that might be the outcome but I’m wary to advise on such a large number of files without seeing an example first.

    Have a great day!

    Peter.
