20s SQL call slows down the page

I have been receiving PHP and SQL errors recently and have tracked it down to an SQL call from this plugin which is taking c.20 to run (because the SQL ends up doing a copy to a temp table).
So I am either looking for support (which doesn’t look forthcoming) or for someone to recommend a supported but free alternative with similar functionality.
