• I spent a short while tonight updating my personal (live) site to WP 2.0 beta 2

Here is my order of operations:

    1. turned off all plugins
    2. deleted the old files (not wp-content folder, or wp-config)
    3. loaded the files from the 2.0b2 archive
    4. ran the upgrade.php
    5. did a happy dance

The upgrade went perfectly, and all of my plugins are functional

Here’s a list of the plugins which seem to be working:
    a€¢ Dunstan’s time of day
    a€¢ Extended Live Archives
    a€¢ Bad Behavior
    a€¢ BBCode
    a€¢ Brian’s Latest Comments
    a€¢ Bunny’s Technorati Tags
    a€¢ Code Viewer
    a€¢ Custom Posts Per Page
    a€¢ Flash Filter Plus
    a€¢ Get Recent Comments
    a€¢ Gravatar
    a€¢ Kitten’s Spaminator
    a€¢ Referrer Bouncer
    a€¢ Recent Posts
    a€¢ Recently Commented Posts
a€¢ Content with show/hide javascript for “more”
    a€¢ Stattraq
    a€¢ Subscribe To Comments
    a€¢ Super Archive
    a€¢ Theme Switcher
    a€¢ Weighted List
    a€¢ WP-Contact Form
    a€¢ Linknotes
a€¢ Live Preview: Admin Panel, Comments

    My thoughts:

    Cool stuff:
Hats off for the new additions and the refinement on the back end. Very nice. Thank you.

    Bummers are:
the upload path is now meaningless. The new scheme for loading images is a great idea, but i want a choice of where they reside, and how they are filed. iTunes and iPhoto archives are arcane enough, this is equally as frustrating for physical digging. hate it.

Still no quick tags for Safari (I’ll write Steve and explain)

The new logo is poor and ungainly.

When editing an entry, the markup tags appear. This makes spell checking harder (after the fact) and will surely confuse my little sister, and other friends who have no clue about markup language and don’t want to know.

    Overall:

A couple of wee steps backward, and the loss of only one function which is essential to my personal process.

But on the whole a seamless and easy upgrade I was afraid was going to be a disaster.

    Thank You!

  • Yes, but would you go so far as to state that WordPress is supported software? Supported software to me would involve being able to raise a ticket stating my problem and then have it resolved via support staff, kinda like the way a web host’s system works.

We all provide support when we can but there are many issues that go un-addressed, which is understandable given the situation but if WordPress was “supported” then every single one of those issues would be addressed in some way.

I would very much prefer it if the attitude was more that issues with development releases can’t be discussed in the main forums but can be discussed in this forum, leave the “not supported” bit out of it.

Ah well, you’re as entitled to your opinion as any of us are.

No issues here. I even uploaded the wp-contents directory. Ran upgrade.php and all is well. Yes I got the error prior to actioning the upgrade but all seems well.

Mind you I have a new site with a few themes and 3 posts on it.

    Me <- Noobie! ??

Shame about the Akismet needing a seperate API key. So I balied out of using it. ??

Well, I’d give you mine if I had a clue that would really work. I’m of the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” scheme of thought, and since right now I have never had one piece of spam with my current setup, Akismet can simply live in the “unused” folder on my drive….

Ha-ha, vkaryl, you’ll be sorry now.

    Why?

Shame about the Akismet needing a seperate API key. So I balied out of using it.

A number of worthwhile applications require an API these days. Google Maps, FAlbum, and Akismet. It’s actually worth the few minutes it takes to get the needed API key. I am all for as much privacy all is desired, and that works both ways (for me, as well as for the community) so it’s no hassle to get a code to enter to participate in something where I’ve been asked to be accountable. The best part about that is that (for now) the accountability is also being asked of a plugin like Akismet. Where in, for the moment, the system is closed, limited to wordpress.com users and their API (unless i missed a workaround trick) which will stave off the lessons so quickly learned by our warm and loving friends who just feel so sure we want a Rolex imitation, a cheap perscription for some medication, and a much, much, much larger penis and porn collection.

Bless their hearts, but I’d rather live without them…

    : )

All very true…. except I’m just not minded to change something that works for me. And I DO have an API, I just don’t have any interest in or need for Akismet.

    Why? Famous last words:

“Hey, Bubba, watch this!” – redneck
“I’ve never felt better” – Douglas Fairbanks
“Either that wallpaper goes, or I do.” – Oscar Wilde
“Don’t worry it’s not loaded.” – Terry Kath
“I have never had one piece of spam…” – vkaryl

If you fry spam in olive oil until its dark, and crunchy, and put it on whole wheat toast, it’s kind of nice… otherwise it’s disgusting (added the vegetarian.)

I wouldn’t mind it if it was signing up to get an API key just for Akismet but currently you need to create a whole WordPress.com blog, which is exactly what people installing WP don’t want as most people installing WP are those trying to escape free or paid hosted services.

Plus I have heard of a lot of false negatives with Akismet and SK2 is yet to do that for me, nor has it had a single false positive, so why should I use Akismet again?

    This is not exact.
You just have to register at WP.com (and that’s all, even if you don’t use the installed weblog) and someday you receive you API key.

I did that and really askimet is cool, very cool highly cool…..
