• Hi folks,
I’m about to try to migrate a WP site from one host to another using WPvivid, I’ve researched the process on various videos but I’m still unclear about one thing.
As it’s essentially a cloning process, I’ll end up with 2 identical sites and the guide says that I’ll need to use the old site’s log in details to access the new site too. But I’m still uncertain about how WordPress will access one site rather than the other if both usernames and passwords are the same, I must be missing something, can anyone shed any light?,
    Many thanks

Users (and passwords) are stored in a site’s database, so if you copy the DB from one place to another, the user logins go along.

Hi, thanks for replying so quickly. Yes, I gather that’s the case, my question is then, if there are 2 identical sites with identical users, passwords and databases, when I log into WordPress admin, how does it know which site I’m logging into, the new or the old?, I’m probably being super-naive here.

There’s no central login facility. You get logged into the site you’re at.

Ok, I’m really sorry for not getting this, I’ll ask one more thing then shut up-
If I log into eg. mysite.com/wp-admin, I’m not really at one site or the other am I as they both have the same URL?, can you expand a little on what you mean.
    Huge thanks

You said you made a copy of the so one is example.com, the other at example-2.com. The don’t have the same URL.

I guess that’s something I’m just going to have to accept, thanks again for replying.

OK, let’s assume you and I both buy door locks and set them to use the same key. However, we install the locks on our own doors. Despite having the same key, when I open my door, I’m in my house, not yours. It’s the same thing with WordPress.

Thanks for the visual analogy, that’s helpful- I think I’m getting it now.
    Cheers!
