Been using the 2FA portion of the Wordfence Plugin for a couple of months on a site and it seemed to work fine with Authy. Today I attempted to login. When prompted for the 2FA I enter the code and website shows a “null” in the title bar of the plugin.

Entering my Recovery codes with and without spaces in the plugin prompt screen on website does nothing other than display NULL in the title bar of the data entry box.

  • Similar problem ))) . The system does not accept 2FA code or recovery codes. The question was raised a week ago and so far no reaction.

Apparently, it is necessary to deactivate the links of sites with this Wordfence-account and create a new account. And never again use 2FA from Wordfence.

PS. And us really need to think about the reliability of the plugin itself, if it is capable of creating such problems. I used Wordfence for about a year on several sites, and it seemed to me a wonderful solution. But now I begin to doubt it.

    Hey @frustrated999,

The quickest way back into the site if something like this happens is to rename the Wordfence plugin directory to something like worfence.bak. Then once you’re back in the site you can rename it back to reactivate it.

Once you’ve done this can you please check for a plugin conflict? Try deactivating all other plugins and run through it again. If it works, the next step will be to narrow down which one is conflicting. If it was previously working I’d focus on anything you’re aware that was recently added or updated.

Please let me know how it goes.

    Thanks,

First I resolved the problem by disabling the plugin and redoing the Token.

I have two concerns regarding continuing to use Wordfence 2FA:
    1) Why is the plugin displaying “nil” in the title bar when an apparent invalid 2FA code is used? Should it not handle that type of issue with more meaningful error message?
    2) Also what use is the recovery codes if they even do not work? This really concerns me.

    Hey @frustrated999,

These aren’t issues I’ve seen, so something definitely isn’t working right. Whether it’s a plugin theme conflict or something else in your system. But the first step would be to check for a plugin conflict.

However, you mentioned resetting the keys worked. Do you know if you were previously using V3 keys?

    Thanks,

I was using the current version of the plugin as its automatically updated.

So if you enter an invalid code in the 2FA input window are you not seeing “null” in the UI? I just tried it now and the current version of the plugin displays “null” in the rectangle area under the Wordperfect W when an invalid code is entered.

    Hey @frustrated999,

I’ve been speaking with the developers about this, and they aren’t able to reproduce it either. They also agreed it could be some type of conflict. Can you please check for that?

We would also like to have a look at your Wordfence Diagnostics report. Please go to the top of the Diagnostics tab on the Wordfence Tools page. There will be a SEND REPORT BY EMAIL button to send the Diagnostics report. Enter [email protected].

Once you have emailed me the Diagnostics report can you reply here to let me know that it has been sent?

Please let me know how the conflict check goes, and once you’ve sent the Diagnostics report.

    Thanks,

    Gerroald

It has been sent and I used “frustrated999” for forum username.

    Hey @frustrated999,

The developer took a look at your Diagnostics, and the list of plugins. He believes it’s likely a plugin conflict as well. Have you had a chance to check this? If not, can you please give it a go?

Also, he notices you have a two-factor plugin installed, but not activated. You might try removing that just in case.

    Thanks,

Just wanted to confirm that this “plugin conflict” you are referring to is in regards to the “nil” being displayed in the Wordfence 2FA screen if one enters an incorrect code? If so what is suppose to appear when one enters an incorrect 2FA code when attempting to login?

Regarding the issue with the inability to login at all that has not reoccurred since I initially reported it so further testing regarding that issue is not needed.

    Hey @frustrated999,

Correct, testing for the conflict is referring to the NULL issues. Below is what should be displayed when a user enters an incorrect code.

CODE INVALID: The 2FA code provided is either expired or invalid. Please try again.

Well I deleted the unactivated 2FA plugin and logged out and then tried to login but intentionally entered an incorrect 2FA. No difference. Still seen “nil” for the response from the WF plugin

    Hey @frustrated999,

I was just mentioning removing that one due it already being deactivated. Have you had a chance to test the full plugin conflict?

    Please let me know.

    Thanks,

If you mean by “full plugin conflict ” disabling each activated plugin one by one and seeing if any of them affect the issue then no I have not had the time to do that.

    Hey @frustrated999,

Okay, please do let me know when you have. We believe this is the most likely cause.

    Thanks,

    Gerroald
