• I have tried for the better part of 2 weeks to set this up to no avail. I hate that I have failed however now I need some expert help.

    I have 2 domains : woaat.com & woaat.org.

woaat.org is up and running and I want to get woaat.com up and running using the database from woaat.org.

2 domains, one database. I’m told it can be done.

I would greatly appreciate it if one of you GURUS out there would “SLOWLY” walk me through the setup step by step.

    Thanks

    Alice

  • Hi Alice,

Just so I understand correctly, are you trying to create two completely different WordPress sites on different domains? Or make a second copy of the same data from the first domain on the second?

woaat.org is a non-profit organization and sells items as well as accepts donations. I want to use the database from woaat.org to set up a duplicate website on woaat.com so that when sales or donation are made, they are kept in the same database.

    Alice

You can install two different WP sites on two separate domains, but the second domain will not link back to any information provided in the first (or vis versa). In other words, they can be kept in the same database, but will be located on a different table within the database itself – they’ll behalf 100% like they are on separate domains despite being on the same one.

This would be done by changing the WordPress prefix when installing the second domain to the database (from wp_ to something else).

I’m fairly certain my info is correct. I don’t know how long you have been using WP but you need to investigate WordPress MU Domain Mapping and get up to speed to see whose is correct.

    Alice

Wow, thanks Alice. That’s news to me ?? Apologies for the wrong info.

Have you looked at this? Also, here is a detailed tutorial on how to accomplish what you are trying to do. Scroll down a bit to view the domain mapping part.

I would also mention though that Google frowns on having two domains with the same information causing duplicate content penalties. You may want investigate further.

OK, I WENT THROUGH YOUR SUGGESTED LINKS AND I’VE ALREADY WENT THAT ROUTE TO NO AVAIL. I NEED A “SLOWED DOWN” STEP BY STEP WALK THROUGH FORM SOMEONE WHO HAS ACTUALLY GOT THIS TO WORK

    Alice

If the sites essentially present the same thing to the viewer, put one domain on 301 redirect to the other.

Or… use PHPMyAdmin to slurp the .org data on occasion. That would be easyiest, use the Backup plugin to save the db every week and extract the numbers you want.

I can understand if the ideas are disappointing, but if you are concerned about separation between the non-profit and the .com, it might be wise to run them separately anyway, use a duplicated db with a different theme so no one can cay they weren’t aware of which site they were on.

    woaat.org…sells items…accepts donations…

    …woaat.com…

    …is intended to do what?

put one domain on 301 redirect to the other.

Yes. Unless woaat.com is *completely* different from woaat.org with different content, purpose and so on, there is no reason to do anything else. I have three domains with alternate addresses such as .com redirecting to .net, and that is likely all you need here also.

Again I appreciate your efforts to assist, but I am determined to do it my way or not at all. There has to be someone on this forum that has accomplished this exact setup that can tell me how it’s done.

    Alice

my way or not at all

People here are willing to help, but not always while having to toss their own hard-won experience and wisdom out the window in order to do so.

Does it matter to you that having sites with duplicate content will destroy your SEO ratings?

If you will have the exact same content on both domains (.org and .com), it will hurt your SEO. Why not just use one domain (e.g. woaat.org) and redirect woaat.com to woaat.org?

    Thread Starter Farmers Daughter

    (@farmers-daughter)

I’m not concerned about SEO ratings and it isn’t that I don’t appreciate your time and effort, but I know it can be done and that’s what I want.

Thanks again for your assistance but what you offer is not the solution to my problem

In this case, point both domains to the same server (its IP address). This way you only need one WordPress with one database and both domains will show the same data.

woaat.org…sells items as well as accepts donations.

I’m not concerned about SEO ratings

Do you understand that means Goggle and other search engines will not index either site and/or return results for people searching?
