1.x-compliant way to have archive dropdown?

Hey all:
I’ve noticed that there are references in the forums to an old b2/WP 0.72-era way to make archive links a dropdown SELECT instead of a series of links.
Is there a better, more 1.x-compliant way to do the same thing? I’d really like to implement it on my site, as the number of months shown is getting a bit unwieldy.
