1and1 Hosting

I’ve used 1and1 for clients before. I didn’t have any trouble setting up wordpress and I don’t think they’ve had any trouble with uptime. They don’t let you “name” your databases like some other hosts do. They name it for you and allow you to give it a description… not a big deal though…

As for the packages, you need the 1&1home at the least. The beginner one doesn’t have a database. You probably won’t need the business one as far as storage and bandwidth (but could always upgrade if you later did).

Yeah – I posted that one! Man. That was fun. I think the guy who I installed it for ended up switching hosts because of that whole situation.

I will say this, though: it turned out the previous installation of WordPress was the 1and1.com installation. meaning, they have a WordPress version that is some sort of 1-click install – they do it all for you. That’s what this guy had originally done – just used the 1-click. He decided he wanted more control and functionality – but he couldn’t get it with that installation, so he thought he’d just do it himself (or rather, have the Install4Free team do it for him).

It was a nightmare, though – in the end, I had to resort to doing a fake MT import. My own personal blog was previously MT, so I still had the file for importing those entries. I copied all of his old posts and information by hand and turned it into the MT format. Then I did the installation and imported his old “MT” blog.

So, I don’t know if they do that with *every* database – but most certainly if you go with them, and you want WordPress installed there – DO NOT use their 1-click version. I can’t tell you for sure that if you use *any* of their databases that they hide such things from their clients – maybe this guy’s issue was just that- that he had previously used that service, I don’t know – I certainly would hope they wouldn’t do that. But just ask a lot of questions before you decide.

I have had a reply from 1and1 who have said that I need to go for the business package as the home does not support MySQL databases.

The problem that you have spoken about suggests that maybe it was because they have disabled lots of areas in the 1 click instal.

If you go here and scroll down or search for mysql, you’ll find that the home does include 25 mysql databases.

https://gimurnet.com offer full support for WordPress installations. I use them for 6 six of my WP sites. They’re also quite cheap.

I recommended 1and1 to a friend, it was great at first but some of the scripts did not work and had downtimes. 1and1 support team kept on telling him to upgrade, but he switched to ixwebhosting. But this was a year ago, they mite provide better service now.

I don’t list 1&1 in my web hosting directory because I hear a lot of mixed feedback. My blog is hosted on Bluehost. Also Hostmonster, HostIcan and Lunarpages are very good for wp blogs.

I used Lunarpages at the moment, however exploring wordpress and other CMS’s with the free 5GB hosting plan that come along with the domain. Check this thread

My aim is if everything works well with the free hosting plan, I will move to Economy Plan ($3.99/m) with 10 MyQSL – which is nothing but the same with the free hosting plan except the forced ads.

I’m with Powweb. Although I was able to set up a dedicated WordPress blog site for $7-77 a month, and create a database, Powweb doesn’t seem allow for the database to grow. I thought it was slow, but in fact the mass of posts to the database appears to have grown too large for their SQL servers after 7 months, (or something!). I can’t extract my db to switch hosts, the Ops won’t work, phpMyAdmin doesn’t respond. So the archive is at risk, shall we say. There is always a price to pay for cheap web hosting.
