    Hi Everyone,

I really hope I can get some help on this, because it’s truly becoming the most frustrating thing in my life right now!

Well, I haven’t messed with my blog since I created it in 2005, other than adding posts and such.

Recently though I have had to start dealing with it, and really need to upgrade it. I followed all the instructions for upgrading it, but am having so much trouble, as usually happens with me. When to go to the upgrade.php file to continue on, it tells me it needs a wp-config file and all that stuff. I edit the config-sample file because it was the only one I could find at all, renamed it, and then uploaded it. Still said it needed the file. Some steps later, after getting a bit frustrated, I added that file to every single folder and level of my wp files, and it STILL says it cannot find it!

Am I just completely missing something? Can anyone please help me, because I really need help with this. I’m hoping once I’m through with upgrading, that I can at least figure out how to get my page looking the way I had it before too, but I first need help with this dern, simple, upgrade!

I really appreciate any and all help on this matter, and thank you in advance!

Perhaps giving more information. What was your version you were trying to upgrade and to which one?
If yours was very old, you should have read the documentation where it says that you should proceed in steps…

Thank you so much for the help. I do apologize I didn’t mention the version I was running before. I’m not sure now how check but it was I THINK 1.2 something . . . It was very old indeed, And I’m upgrading to the most recent (2.2.2 is it?).

As for the steps you linked to, that’s actually what I used. But am still having trouble (with step 9 to be exact).

(EDIT: Wait, I apologize, I FINALLY read all the way to the bottom and noticed that I should upgrade to 1.5 FIRST, and then to the latest. And here I was going to do that, but then thought I read somewhere I didn’t have to. Now I read I do. I apologize. Do I have to revert back to the original version before doing this, or can I just go to start upgrading to 1.5 where I am?)

Sorry, maybe I linked the wrong page.
From 1.2 you need forst to upgrade to 1.5. Transform your style(s) to themes.
Then from 1.5 upgrade to 2.2.2. (although I’ve never tried this jump…)

You can NOT upgrade from 1.2 to the latest.

OK, we posted in the same time.

Get back the original (I hope you have a backup!) and go with the step by step instructions.
(In this context the step by step means not the steps outlined in the codex but the “gradual” upgrade)

Thank you SO much for the help, things don’t seem so frustrating anymore, as long as my simple mind can do things right this time.

I did have a backup, copied all the files onto my HDD (and a disc as well) and will go ahead and revert back to the original and then to 1.5, then to 2.2.2 (you said you never did that though, is there a reason I shouldn’t bother with upgrading to 2.2.2?)

    Hmmm…
I hope when you say you have a backup you didn;t refer only to the WP files. That’s not enough. All your content is (was?) in the database, I hope you backed up the DB, too!

I meant: I’ve never upgraded directly from 1.5.x to 2.2.2. The biggest jump I had to do for somebody was from 1.5.3.1 to 2.0.1.

    Oh okay, whew,

Well I believe I backed the database up (via myphpadmin way), and then I also backed up the wp files onto my HDD through the FTP way

    Sheesh . . .

Now I can’t download the 1.5 file to upgrade. It says I need to log in, but I’m logged in, even went to my preferences and added my real name, and I have cookies enabled of course. Is something else needd that I’m missing once again?

(EDITED: Is the wordpress-1.5-strayhorn download alright?)

1.5 or 1.5.2 – doesn’t really matter: it will be there only for a few minutes ??
Clicking on any of the .zip links should be fine:

    Thanks,

I still need your help though, I hope I’m not being a bother. Now I’ve done all the steps, but every time I try to view to see the page, or to login to the admin as it says to do to go to options and such . . . every page cannot be viewed really, it wants to download onto my computer before anything else, and be viewed there. Have you come across that before? I’m sure I must’ve messed up somewhere or forgotten something, but I can’t think of anything at all, and can’t understand why it’s doing this. . .

Yes, because I am old, I can remember things like that :0
I mean at some point there were a lot of complaints about files wanting to download instead of showing.
Which browser, and what WP version are you at now?

    Thread Starter cmm77wfc

    (@cmm77wfc)

    ?? Thanks ??

Well I’m using IE6 and it shows version 1.5

According to some older posts – it might be related to the PHP memory limit. Others say it it plugin related… but you deactivated all your plugins, didn’t you?

If it is the memory limit that would cause problem with further upgrade, too. Try to search for a solution for memory limit via .htaccess file.

    Thread Starter cmm77wfc

    (@cmm77wfc)

Aw, Well I actually didn’t have any plugins activated to begin with, but I went ahead and made sure none were activated.

So the memory limit might be the problem? I’ve tried finding the .htaccess file many many times, but cannot find it now. I found it a very long time ago, but . . . not now ??

Maybe you don’t have it ??
I really can’t remember how it was in 1.2. It was quite a while ago, sorry.
In FTP sometimes you have to set it to “show hidden files” or something similar to see it. If there isn’t one – just create it.
