I am trying to get SMTP working with my bike club’s website hosted at Siteground. The domain is hosted at 123-reg, and email is hosted at Google. Every time I try to set up this plugin per the instructions there is an error message about an authentication error (from Google I think!) What am I doing wrong and how do I fix it?

It’s ok, I got it sorted.

FYI I needed an ‘app password’ from Google, but to get it I needed to turn on 2FA – they’re not available without that. Entertaining that password mad everything work (after going all round the houses looking for this solution!)

Thank you. Turning on 2FA makes it work.

For anyone out there, the following settings work with a Google Workspace (aka G Suite) account.

    smtp.gmail.com

    SMTP Secure: TLS

    SMTP Authentication: Yes

    Port: 587

    As seen on https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7104828?hl=en

I’ll leave a screenshot here, in order to help others
