• Lately, I’ve noticed that whenever I publish a post it takes an unusually long time to have it go through its process. Here’s what happens:

    1. I hit “publish” and WP does it thing
    2. After waiting about 30 seconds, it’s still doing its thing
    3. Meanwhile, I go to my blog and see that the article has posted, but….
    4. WP edit is still publishing.

Even as I write this, I can’t get back into my admin panel; I’m assuming it’s still busy. Strange thing is I can get to it in IE, but in Firefox (where I published it in the first place) I can’t. I can get into my test admin panel, but not the one for the live blog (they each use the same database). So maybe it’s related to Firefox (cache perhaps, which I’ll clear again to be sure).

I do have a few other services listed in the “Update Services” field under “Options > Writing”. I do remember reading somewhere that adding to this list could cause delays. Is this what’s happening? Does anyone else here put other services in that list?

Also, I’d be interested in knowing how other users tell the world that they have updated their blog if the don’t add anything to that list of services.

Here’s an update: I quit out of Firefox and was finally able to get back into my admin panel, so I guess it was session related?

I’d still like to know about the Update Services question I had though.

It’s due to the fact that you have “Attempt to notify any Weblogs linked to from the article (slows down posting.)” checked in the writing interface. Some site just take longer to confirm a ping than others do.

I must be brain-dead because I know I’ve seen that phrase before, but for the life of me I can’t find it. Are you talking about Options > Writing? All I see there with regard to updating is the Update Services and the list of URLs I put in there.

Once I find that option, do you recommend I uncheck it?

What do you, personally, do to update these services? Or do you? Is it really beneficial or do these services eventually get notified some other way within a reasonable amount of time?

For WP v1.2.x: It’s right under the field in which you write your post.

    For WP v1.5: It’s on Options/Discussions.

I prefer to leave it on and just wait patiently. I only get a delay once every ten or so posts. For me, a “reasonable amount of time” is about ten minutes. Though, my posts are usually published in under one minute.

Well, I thought I was going crazy, but it’s not there. What I have is:

    – PingBack the URIs in this post ?
    – TrackBack an URI (Separate multiple URIs with spaces.)
    – Then the “Save and continue editing”, “Save”, and “Publish” buttons

Hmmm, so should I be worried?

Go to OPTIONS > Discussion and look for this near the top:
Attempt to notify any Weblogs linked to from the article (slows down posting.) and UNCHECK it if it is already checked.
