I have it set in my downloads/settings/misc page that File Download Limit is 1, and in the individual Download post I also have the limit set to 1; yet when I tested it, I was able to download the file as many times as I wanted, either by hitting the browser refresh button or the “direct link” multiple times – is there someplace else that I’m supposed to set the limit to 1?

I should add that I’m using the “Free Download” add-on … I already have a subscription system in place using Wishlist Member, with the idea that subscribers will get their new download offering at the beginning of each month. Since the members pay for the subscription in advance (which includes other content beyond the download), that is why I’m bypassing the shopping cart in Easy Digital Downloads.

That problem is happening because of the Free Download extension.

I’m sorry but we cannot support 3rd party extensions. Please ask the extension developer.

Thanks for the fast reply! I’m sorry, I didn’t realize the add-on was a 3rd party. In advance of approaching them, is there a way (without using the add-on) to bypass the cart within Easy Digital Downloads-only for the individual download, since as I mentioned earlier, these downloads will be for pre-paid subscribers?

It’s a fantastic plugin, by the way – very thankful for this added functionality!!

I just saw that you’ve also created a membership plugin, Restrict Content Pro … I wish I had known about that before, as Wishlist Member has been a beast to customize, and they’ve encrypted a lot of their code. I might consider a switch, but I’m hoping to launch my new subscription service in September, and am not sure I’ll have time to start over …

No, there is not a way to bypass the cart for free downloads.

If you ever have questions about Restrict Content Pro, I will be happy to answer them!

Hi Vafpress, any luck with finding out why the download limit isn’t working? Thanks in advance –

Hi marvmckay66, download limit shouldn’t be ignored with the currently updated version (0.2.0), please give it a try and confirm if it’s working, thanks for the report and sorry for the wait.

    Hi Vafpress,

Thanks so much for the update on the plugin – it works great!

Is there a way, however, for me to have the “Sorry but you have hit your download limit” message within a regular page on my site? I see the functions with the error messages within the “edd-functions.php” page, but am not sure how to output those on my own custom page.

    Thanks again!

It would also be good to have this error message on one of my own pages, because if someone clicks the browser back button to get out of the error page, then it goes back to the “Your download will start shortly” page, and then the viewer needs to click the browser back button a second time … it would be nice to have a cleaner way back to regular content than 2 browser back clicks.

    Hi Vafpress,

For some reason, new account signups are getting the “you have hit your download limit” error message even though they are logged in for the very first time (so there’s no way they could have already downloaded the item) – any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this? In which database table is the download status saved?
