spam karma doesnt work..

Here are some more constructive suggestions:
1. Closing comments WON’T stop spam unless you actually delete all the php files related to comments. If you don’t do that you will still have to delete the spams even if they’re not appearing, so you might as well keep comments open and send everything to moderation.
2. It’s not WordPress’s fault if a plugin doesn’t work, try another plugin and see if it does the job better. There are so many spam plugins out there and new ones coming out all the time, don’t give up because one didn’t do everything you want! You might need a combination of plugins to give you the protection you need. I believe spam karma is quite a new plugin so you can’t expect it to be perfect yet.
3. Don’t give up on your blog, that would be letting the spammers win! I know it’s frustrating having to delete their crap all the time but why should you let other people dictate what software you use or force your site offline?

John – if one plugin doesn’t suit, try another.
I’m using Kitten’s plugins on 3 sites and I don’t see any spam at all. None.
And like NM says – once the spammers work round plugin code, they’ll hit. That’s the spammers to be shouted at, not the plugin authors.

If you create a program that does everything for everybody, and includes all of this in the core, then you get a huge, bloated, complex, unruly, and unmanageable program.
Better to create a way for folks to create a task-specific module, or plugin, and keep the main program lean and mean. In this way, you can very easily customize your own installs. That way, if you don’t want the capability to display your current “Listening to this song on my iPod” function, you don’t have to install the plugin.
Extensibility makes a program ultimately flexible, and it also spreads the workload out among many folks. Additionally, you find that people create plugins in their main interest areas, so you can probably assume that they have a vested interest on making a good product. Also, some folks don’t have the programming skills to work on the core itself, but can happily develop skills and create useful additions at the plugin level.

well i can understand all that,but as for 2 or 3 weeks ago i didnt had any spam to my comments.
it just started..
and its all great that scripts are created for free but 4 plugins ?
isnt that a little bit to much ….and i still get them..
so what can i shutdown ?
and what i dont understand is that ive tried 2 webadresses and they dont excist…..weird.
and it seems that they find my stories that still has the comments open.
cause when they added a comment ive closed the option to comment…
but weird is that they find them somehow…
cause they are bots….right ?
so how do i close the comments down ?
ive done that in the administration but that doesnt override…
ideas ?

well im trying a few things out now.
i still get spammed but they are not waiting to be moderated..
they are not there…
but thats just the same problem we have with the usual spam.
This is done by bots so why not developing something that stops that..?
These developed anti spam scripts plugins are nice but the actual spammer still delivers his spam…
Simply because its wasted BUT not rejected or even kicked out ,….
So its the same idea behind spam….a mail is send and if the address doesnt excist it get bounced.

You can’t develop the end-all solution to spam, because the bot devs will find away around it. The best way to deal with it is to use a myriad of plugins and continue to update to the latest anti-spam methods.

Granted it contained [duly tagged] profanity, but that doesn’t change a thing to the spirit of the rest, which I felt was quite important as to the matter at hand…
It would have been nice to at least contact me by mail about it.

john1000, if you’re thinking that changing to another blog software will spare you from spammers, I think you’ll find it’s quite otherwise.

drdave, that might have been nice; sometimes things don’t go that way, though.

I was in a much worse state, commentspamwise, when I was using a different blog script. WordPress at least has comment moderation, and now a blacklist hole which does seem to work. I am waiting for the weekend when the spammer seems to have more time to devote to his foolishness. I have to say that none of the plugins have worked all that well for me except an earlier spaminator… the blackhole i like. I have added the newly fashionable asciii-coded names and they get taken out very nicely. (theres another thread about the comments still showing in the database/dashboard but I wont go into that here)

Spam Karma works great for me. At the moment. I installed it last night in the middle of a spam flood. It killed the flood and cleaned up the aftermath almost immediately.

The blackhole in WordPress 1.5 does work. However if you check “Blacklist comments from open and insecure proxies.” then all your comments gets hosed. Another post here.

john1000, if you take appropriate measures, you shouldn’t need any anti-comment-spam plugins.

I de-activated all my comment spam plugins over two weeks ago and turned off comment moderation – and not a single spam has made it through my defences.

Previous to that I was getting dozens of spams per night.
