Then I clicked the “Upgrade Network” button.
I noticed from upgrading other sites that it usually works from newest blog to oldest.
I get an error from the newest blog :
Upgrade Network

Warning! Problem updating https://mysite.com/jefftest2. Your server may not be able to connect to sites running on it. Error message: couldn’t connect to host
The server is behind a firewall, and I’m using a proxy server. I wonder if that could cause a problem ?
Can I run update.php from command line ? It does the database updates right? Is there another way to do this ?
Thanks
]]>Most of them are UX people that have installed plug-ins and modify CSS for their WP sites through sftp. Recently, however, some have moved to the multiuser framework.
In the past they’ve written their CSS and installed their plugins by ftp’ing the files to the WP sites. Now that they’re moving to multiuser, it’s not clear how to copy the plugins and copy the css themes.
Is it the best practice to have ftp or ssh access for the WordPress developers or is it best practice for them to install all the CSS and plugins via the WP UI?
Many of their unix sysadmins want to limit or eliminate the WP developers ssh/ftp access for security concerns.
Thoughts? What are the best practices?
]]>Now, to the issue: WP has this nice “auto-update” feature, right? Yet, it isn’t really automated at all, you have to manually start it up and run it, give it a password if the site isn’t writeable by the web server, etc.
What I want is a *truly* automated way of updating my wp website, i.e, requiring *no* intervention from me. I want to be able to, for example, set a cron job that checks to see if there are any updates every night and go ahead and install them. For this I would need some sort of feed from wordpress about various things including new wp versions, new plug-in versions, new theme versions. Then I can write the script to do the update on the fly.
In some cases, I have plug-ins that when new versions are installed, I have to reset permissions as they overwrite the existing permissions and reset them back to the defaults which don’t allow the server to write into necessary directories. So I’d need to have sort of post-install initialization to ensure that such things are cleaned up.
At any rate, if someone has already done such a thing, I’d appreciate hearing about it.
]]>I’ve installed and configured the plugin with no problems on the latest version of WordPress running on PHP5. I did the little hack for PHP5 in one of the config files, and I also have made sure the WP_CACHE bit is in the wp-config.php file.
It all seems to be right, but no pages are being cached. I can verify this by seeing that nothing’s being created in the wp-content/cache directory, and the WP-Cache text is not being put at the bottom of my pages. Plus the plugin options show 0 pages.
So the last thing I’m thinking is permissions, but I think those should be right too. I have all directories (including wp-content and cache) owned by the web user, and the permissions are 755 like they should be. I simply don’t see any reason why this isn’t working.
I’ve seen the other threads, by the way, and those were always either issues with the PHP5 tweak, or a problem with permissions; nobody’s addressed this specific issue. If you have any ideas I’m very eager to hear them.
Thanks!
