I am helping to re-design a live current site. The owners are wanting a completely different look, so this entails me essentially starting from scratch. They want to change their domain name, also. How do I undergo intense edits like these without messing up the current state of the live site? I don’t want to publish all of my edits until the new site is essentially complete.
]]>Then I switched the URL structure to words only instead of with the date like WP.com automatically uses and ended up with LOTS of 401 errors. I tried to fix them, but some still aren’t working and it’s beyond my skill level to sort them all out.
When my blog gets a bit of traffic, the site frequently goes down and my hosting company says I need to clean up my database, optimize, my photos are too big and using too many resources. I’m using Cloudflare now, but it’s not helping.
There are other errors that show up when I look at the Google Search Console, like missing author name and updated date. I have no idea where to start fixing these.
I’ve learned a lot about WordPress and SEO since starting, but I feel like I’m wasting my time adding better quality posts on a site with all these issues.
The site isn’t helping my business because it’s slow and gets very little traffic. There are quite a few posts with a good SEO score (about 40) that I’ve put a lot of time and effort into, so I’d hate to lose all my work, but because of the other issues with the site, do you think I should put in the work to fix the site or just start over?
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
]]>I’ve solved a few start up issues, but would like to wipe everything clean and start over. What do I need to leave behind (pages, plugins, themes, etc?
At times WordPress seems to stall when I hit UPDATE, Edits show up in HISTORY but not the “real” pages, I get server error 500 after edits, etc. These problems do not seem theme specific and I’ve deactivated plugins without results.
So, how do I get back to an absolutely clean slate?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Ralph
]]>I have just taken over from someone in our small company and I will now be responsible for our website.
The problem is that our website is TERRIBLE.
I want to start from scratch as the current one contains all sorts of funny bugs and issues, as well as looking like it’s from the 1990s.
How do I go about starting from scratch, but leaving our current site intact until the new version is usable?
I am computer literate and keen to learn, but as far as building websites go I am a complete novice. Fingers crossed you can help me.

]]>My problem is that no individual pages load: none of the portfolio pages, none of the informational pages. It’s like anything that loads – reverts to the home page of recent posts.
When I click any link, it cycles through from “waiting for mywebsite.com” to “processing request” and a flash to nothing.
The i have the Options Framework and Portfolio Post Type plugins loaded.
Thanks for any help you might provide.
]]>For a variety of reasons, the site has become slow and clunky. I’m guessing there are too many plugins, as well as too many themes that I’ve added to my wp-content/themes folder. I have probably been too lazy in updating wordpress and plugins too.
So here’s my question: would it be better/easier for me to leave the wordpress structure intact and delete the posts, themes, etc. within that, or would it be better for me to completely delete wordpress, then reinstall a fresh copy of wordpress?
]]>Step by step on how to do this would be fantastic!
]]>I’ve been trying to remove a photo and substitute another one but it’s not working. I removed every page and every post but wasn’t successful in removing “Title.” I’ve logged off and input the url. I get a 404 message but the picture shows on it.
Have no idea what to do and hoping someone here can help.
Many thanks,
Jane
