I have installed the plugin and activated it but am receiving the error: The server refused the connection.

There is a box on the screen with this error in it.

Can someone help?

Hi all,

I have been asked to breathe life into a dysfunctional WordPress site. The site files that were given to me include:

1. WordPress installation folder
2. .sql database file

I have installed these into a local MAMP environment running on Mac OS X Yosemite. The data is visible in the database tables and the wp_content and wp_include files all seem to be in good order.

My issue is that when I click on the site at “localhost:8888/myWPsite/”, the browser goes to “localhost/myWPsite/” (parsing the “:8888”) and says reads, “Safari can’t open the page “localhost/myWPsite” because Safari can’t connect to the server “localhost.” I can’t seem to get the browser to stick to the /localhost:8888/ url.

Other points to note:
1. “siteurl” in wp_options is set to “https://localhost:8888/myWPsite/”
2. All my other WP installations are running fine using the same database user credentials.
3. I edited my .htaccess file to the following:

Connection lost / running very slow

Over the last few months, our site has been descending into being hardly useable because we so often get a “Connection lost” error message on the back end right above the post, which means we cannot save / upload / do much of anything — and then also a server error message often on the front end. Eventually, the site starts running fine again — it comes and goes, but it’s becoming more and more frequent. We’re fully up to date on WP, we have not added any plugins (the site worked perfectly fine before, so it doesn’t seem like that’s a logical culprit), and it’s just making it incredibly difficult to run the site.

I suspect this may be a problem with our server / host, but I wanted to put the question out here as well to see if it is possibly a problem with WordPress? What can we do? We’re considering shifting our site to a new host, but I want to exhaust all options first.

Cant access site after server migration

After a recent server migration all of my WP sites (and only WP sites) are no longer accessible (tested Firefox and Chrome on 2 diff. networks). DB Connection appears to be fine, but the site won’t come up and I cannot log in.

Details:

Hosting: GoDaddy Linux Shared Hosting (I know, I know… I’ll get around to finding a better provider, I promise.)

My WP sites are a subdomain of my root domain.
My non-WP subdomain websites are all accessible.
DNS lookup and Trace Route aren’t showing any problems that I can see.
I can reach the files/folders via ftp and/or ssh (although my ssh abilities are limited since its shared hosting).

What I’ve tried:

opened config file to check db connections (does not appear to be problem there.)
tried renaming plugins folder to plugins.hold
tried renaming .htaccess to .htaccezz everywhere I could find it.
I already checked The Google without any luck.

I’m stuck… Any help would be greatly appreciated.
