We were given the opportunity to have our site hosted on someone else’s server. They have VPS hosting with pair.com. They were able to add our domain to their pair Networks Web hosting account. Now all that’s left to do is transfer our site, which is where I’m lost.
Any help will be appreciated.
]]>This is my setup so that someone will perhaps find a clue as to why these installs keep failing:
‘
‘
I’ve installed FIVE times. The first time WordPress started with login but the Editor did not work & WP did not recognize permission changes. Second time, same thing.
Third time, white screen, no information, but hours later, fiddling with file changes and uploads, it started, but it warned that ALL four themes were broken, should be deleted, and to reinstall one theme. Editor did not work. WP did not recognize permissions. Fearing to go forward with a broken version, I reinstalled a fourth time.
Fourth install (with debugging = true in config.php), I got a white screen with this message: Warning: call_user_func_array() expects parameter 1 to be a valid callback, function ‘_show_post_preview’ not found or invalid function name in /usr/www/users/hostname/sitename/blog/wp-includes/plugin.php on line 503. This seems to be reporting some flaw in the files. I did not mess with them.
With every installation, I get LESS functionality.
Made a fifth and FINAL attempt at a fresh WordPress installation from a NEW download of the 4.3.1 zip file tonight into a squeaky clean local directory, wiping all files from the server, and deleting the database beforehand. Same result. White screen, not even a WP login page, and no info, even though wp_config.php is set to return debugging information.
I am buffaloed. Any wisdom will be appreciated.

]]>For the first time I’m trying to host with pair.com. They use qmail instead of sendmail, but I’m not sure if that makes any difference. I’ve got WP installed and running, but it wont send emails.
Any ideas why or where to begin with troubleshooting? I contacted pair support but they said they don’t provide support for issues related to WordPress.
Thanks
]]>I’m currently hosting with Pair.com and have a decent amount of access to change things such as php settings etc. I just need to know what to look for / change.
The settings that WordPress checks to determine if it turns on the easy method or FTP method would probably be a good starting spot, anyone know / know where I could find these?
]]>I’m hosting a blog with WordPress at pair.com. For some bizarre reason, if a person clicks on permalinks or separate pages hosted by the blog, the URL in the address bar of the browser is www45.pair.com/username/wordpress/yaddayaddayadda
rather than blogsite.net/yaddayaddayadda
.
I inquired of pair.com’s support folks, and they think it’s something in WordPress. I searched the forums but didn’t find anyone else who had encountered this issue.
I feel like it must be something simple that I’m missing, and I’ll probably feel like a fool when I figure it out (hopefully with some assistance), but I’m just not seeing it.
Any help that anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated, and I offer sincere thanks in advance.

]]>The short answer is: do not use the “5-minute installation” instructions that wordpress offers. Instead, scrupulously follow the instructions offered at https://www.pair.com/support/knowledge_base/authoring_development/tools_of_the_trade_wordpress.html .
When I tried, repeatedly, to install my site with the “5-minute installation,” all appeared to work until I first logged in using the auto-generated admin login and password. At that point, I would either get a message that I did not have sufficient permissions for the site, OR I would get what appeared to be the dashboard, but lacking any menu items to manage the site. Therefore the site was basically useless to me and I had to start over.
So, I erased everything (database and wordpress files) that I’d installed via the 5-minute installation instructions. Then I followed the directions at the URL I listed above, and that did the trick. You do need telnet access and some comfort with command-line server access, but the directions are clear and easy to follow once you’ve got that. Write down every username and password that you get when you set up the database using pair.com’s control panel, as you will need the first one (the full access one) for editing your wp-config.php file.
People who are shopping for web hosters should also note that the minimum-level hosting account needed at pair.com is “Advanced,” which costs $17.95 per month. There are much cheaper deals out there. That being said, I have found pair to be stable and reliable and responsive over several years during which I’ve had several clients hosting sites with them, something I cannot say of their cheaper more wordpress-installation-friendly competitor dreamhost.com , for instance.
Best luck to others in my situation!
