This is a life-changing thing for me, a very very useful plugin specially for developers.
]]>I am planning on using WordPress for the blog portion of my website.
For my non-WP site, I frequently make changes by building a new application on my local machine and then deploying it to my production machine.
Is this work flow also done with WordPress (ie: make changes locally or on some other server and then deploy them to your live site)?
I was thinking of using the Duplicator plugin for this but from reading the documentation, I don’t understand how live changes would be preserved (eg: If posts are added to my live site while I am working on a new update on my local machine, then when I upload the new version, the posts won’t be shown. That is, I upload the new version with its database, thus loosing any changes made to the database in the interim). Is this correct? Or did I misunderstand how this plugin works?
How do you make changes to a live site in WordPress? Say I wanted to change a function in my theme’s functions.php file but didn’t want to make that change on the live site.
Thank you
]]>I have recently migrated a site from local to live server. It uses a TwentyTwelve child theme. Everything is fine – except that the link for my header image and icon fonts will not change after both running a SQL query (as found in these instructions) and trying the VelvetBlues plugin to update my URLS.
I wonder why it would be these two things specifically? All other links/images are working as expected.
I’d rather not share the URL if possible – I’m hoping this is a basic universal issue.
Thank you – any advice is appreciated.
]]>I have this huge thing that I just can’t figure out. Right now I made a nice theme and added some content to it, but now I want to make it live for everyone to see.
Is it possible to get my local website to the online wordpress website I made?
Of not, is it possible to get my local website to a .tk weebsite?
I think I know about setting up a database (I use XAMPP) but creating a user is confusing for me. What settings do I have to use? can I just make up a new nickname? What do I fill in at the box: “Host”? Is this still localhost if you put it online?
besides, I really struggle with the wp_config php file. I guess that If I set up a new user I have to copy that information to that file (so the nickname, password and host)?
I hope someone can help me because I am lost. this is day 3 of me trying. Ive seen so many videos now and still..
Regards, Joyce
]]>This is the first time using FileZilla and I’m not sure where to place the files.
– Take them from local
-Drag and drop into the host
is that all that needs to be done? Theres 25000 files, I just want to be sure that I’m doing this right before uploading that many files.
Has ANYONE had any luck taking an Instant WordPress site from the local installation to live on a GoDaddy.com server??? I have read through the eBook, followed it step by step, Googled every possible angle and read every possible post on the codex and cannot get the site to work live!! I’ve built a couple of sites on Instant WordPress which include hours and hours of work and will have to completely redo them if I can’t make this work. I want to at least get these ones up and then try something different (like building in a sub-directory) after these are up. I’m not good with php files and all the database stuff that goes with WordPress (just started using it). So I’m going to need very specific instructions.
Specifically, when I migrate a site I am using Filezilla to move the plugins, themes and uploads files to the wp-content folder. Then using the “Tools – Export/Import” function to bring in the content. The content comes in fine, but I get “failure” notices for all the media and the media library is empty except for an oddly named .xml.txt file. And I cannot figure out how to make the URLs go from the Instant WordPress local URL’s to the actual domain name. I tried using the Velvet Blue plugin and it messed the whole site up. I finally had to just delete the whole installation so I can start over.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated! I’m about to pull my hair out and am not looking forward to having to recreate all these sites all over again! Please, please help me!
I’m looking for a solution for easy cloning and updating posts from local machine to live site, so my suggestion would be to have one “clone/update options” page, where administrator can select what to clone to another live site/db.
clone/update:
posts
pages
categories
tags
custom fields
taxonomies
clone now! (or cron option for hourly, daily cloning)
I believe it would be widely used…
cheers!
