Problems with link masking

Hi –

I am running an aggregation/curation site that relies heavily on links to third-party content. (You can think of it as a sort of Google News-style page but one that serves a specific industry, with the post titles/article headlines and short snippet of text displayed on the frong page and a clickable headline/post title that leads to the external link, but with no option for posting comments or otherwise opening the post.)

I would like to be able to mask the external links to these articles, and to make it possible for readers to share those URLs via social media with my site as the reference point. But this has been a problem.

The links generated via the base-64 or “special numeric code” options under Settings > No External Links > Link Encoding work fine when clicked directly on the page. But when these links are opened by some other means, i.e. by copying and pasting them into a browser, then they generate “suspicious link” messages.

The normal masking method (my site domain, followed by “goto”, followed by the outbound URL) doesn’t always work. Sometimes it’s fine, but there are other occasions when the link doesn’t open at all and the user is taken back to the front page of the site.

Any ideas for addressing this would be appreciated. What would be optimal is some sort of pretty link (my site domain, followed by the post title but without any reference to the external source’s URL) that doesn’t create problems as described above and that is SEO-friendly.

Link Mask Generator and it's affect on search indexing

While adding some pages to my robots.txt file created through SEO Ultimate I noticed the Disallow:/go/ for link masking.

Well I am not trying to mask any links on affiliate sales otherwise I’d just use rel=nofollow which is their biggest concern. I am curious if oogle frowns when they see Disallow: /go/ in robots or if it matters. Would really appreciate the assurance thank you.

My current robots.txt looks like:

It’s been a while since I used the plugin. I was under the impression that you could mask all links globally, and then unmask them on a page-by-page, link-by-link basis. I found an old blog posting to that effect.

Wasn’t there a window underneath the text editor that listed all of the links on the page, and then you could click a check box for the links to unmask?

In any event, for siloing purposes, I want to mask the entire top nav, and only unmask the sidebar navigation links. How would I accomplish this?

I’ve been unclear as to how I can use the All in One SEO plugin “Link Masking” Can anyone please give me clear instructions as to how I can use this field to make my links appear different from the real URL so when someone hovers the link they don’t see a long URL instead a shorter customized one.

adding links etc. works fine – but when i activate “Link Masking”, i get 404 error clicking the link.
What to do?
Mod_rewrite works fine for regular WP permalinks…

WP-Affiliate – how?

I’m running V2.7 but for the life of me I can’t figure out how to use this plugin. There’s a category in my Admin Panel that says WP-Affiliate but clicking on that just brings up a page that says “Welcome” and nothing else. I’ve hunted around everywhere in the Admin panel and have no idea where to administer the categories and links.

Any ideas?

Hi I have installed WP-Affiliate and for the life of me can not get the links to mask. Each time I try I keep getting directed to my “you are looking for something that is not here” page. I notice that the plugin hasn’t been updated it quite awhile, does anyone know if the plugin still works in 2.6.1 and if not can anyone link me to a similar plugin that does work.
