Garbage Character and Flush

I’ve setup W3TC with Amazon Cloudfront and everything appears to be working quite well. The one issue I am having is with the “junk characters” that appear on the full and mobile versions of my site. I assume that term is referring to the “symbol” character of a rectangle that pops up in a few places.

If I totally remove Cloudfront, it goes away. When I add it back in, it comes back. In your FAQ it’s suggested to remove the flush() function but I have no clue where to find that. I checked the .htaccess file for the rewrite rules but did not find it there.

Any other suggestions on how to get rid of this annoyance?

Migrated WP Blog – garbage characters appear

I just migrated a blog to a new server – testing it before switching over, so I have “live” access to both old and new installations. All works fine, except now I’ve got these funky garbage characters in my posts: ? They’re question marks inside diamonds, and they stand in for punctuation marks – quotes, apostrophes, etc.

The SAME THING happened the last time I changed hosts for this particular blog a few years ago. I remember solving it in one fell swoop, but can’t recall how. I normally log such lessons learned, but I’ve got no record of this. Foolish.

What’s odd is, I just migrated two other blogs to the same new server, without the problem. In any case, I’m guessing this might relate to copying text into WP from Word or elsewhere.

I’ve researched through the WP forum, can’t find a clear fix.

The MySQL databases in both the original and new blog installations are set to collate with utf8_general_ci. I even compared collation between old and new for various tables – charsets are set the same. wp-config.php has same charset settings in both old and new blog installations.

Hi,

After my site was hacked I deleted the directory and reinstalled using a month prior backup.

Worddefence security scan shows this.

Modified plugin file: wp-content/plugins/wordpress-seo/languages/wordpress-seo-hu.mo

I see garbage characters, which are indicative of malicious code.

This file belongs to plugin “WordPress SEO” version “1.3.4.4” and has been modified from the file that is distributed by www.remarpro.com for this version. Please use the link to see how the file has changed

Is it correct that this is not in the WordPress SEO new version?

[Plugin: Front-end Editor] "One paragrpaph at a time" brings garbage characters.

When I choose “Edit one paragraph at a time”, I see garbage characters instead of the text of my posts and pages. When I choose to edit the whole text, everything is OK. I tried WP 3.1.2 and WP 3.0, with WYSIWYG and without, in different themes: Thematic, Starkers, Twenty-ten, and in Opera, Firefox and Chrome – the same problem everywhere.

img 2 – “Edit one paragraph at a time, instead of an entire post” – checked. The text is in Russian.

The problem is only with the text of posts and pages.

XMLRPC – Garbage Characters before <XML> node??

I know there are a bunch of XMLRPC threads. I’ve searched through 8 (pages) or so and haven’t seen anyone reporting this particular issue so here I am starting a new post.

I like many folks want to use Live Writer to make posts to my local wordpress server. But like many others my xmlrpc.php isn’t working correctly.

Here’s my problem simplified into a screenshot:

For whatever reason, my xmlrpc.php file is including a few garbage characters before the node in xmlrpc’s response (see screenshot). As you can see, the xmlrpc is reporting the right info – but the garbage characters are causing Live Writer to assume an invalid server response.

I have scoured the net for days for solutions and have tried many things including:
– remove newlines from your .php files
– disable all plugins
– change your theme
– include code in the xmlphp.php itself, etc

…But NONE of these things fixes my problem – the garbage characters won’t go away!

My system specs are in the screenshot but here they are in text format:

– IIS6/Win2k3
– FastCGI for IIS6 1.5 RC
– PHP 5.3.0
– WordPress 2.8.2
