Extra Configuration Needed to make Apple Podcasts Work with EmbedPress

Florence at EmbedPress was an absolute lifesaver! Embedding Apple podcasts on my WordPress site didn’t work as advertised and required unforeseen configuration to get around some access glitches. Florence had never encountered this issue, but took the time to identify the problem and patiently guide me through the steps to fix it with incredible courtesy and skill. She was not only creative in finding a solution but also went above and beyond to ensure everything was perfectly set up for my individual site needs. That said, this incompatibility issue with Apple should be fixed. In the meantime, I couldn’t have asked for a better support experience. Thank you, Florence!

Cover & Episode Artwork not displaying properly in Apple Podcasts on iOS17

I’ve noticed two issues:

#1: With the latest Apple iOS 17 update, my podcast artwork is not filling the full space compared to other shows.

itunes:summary no longer used by apple podcasts?

A podcast site I manage has long used Powerpress’s field for the itunes Summary on podcasts posts (Podcast Episode -> Episode Info -> See more settings -> Summary) and I can see in our RSS feed that the still contains our summary, yet the apple podcast’s app on iOS devices is now displaying our full podcast post description, including clickable hyper links and some markup (bulleted lists) etc.

Our old posts too, are also now showing the full post. I noticed that itunes:summary is no longer listed here: in their RSS guide: https://help.apple.com/itc/podcasts_connect/#/itcb54353390

I don’t think anything is invalidating our summary tag, but I thought I would check and see if this is now a known thing that it’s no longer used? Is there any other way to stop itunes from using our full podcast post?

Interestingly, our episode listings on the apple podcast website (https://podcasts.apple.com/) is still respecting the summary.

Apple says I need iTunes:type tag to match Subscription

We’ve recently added Apple Subscriptions to our podcast, but evidently Apple doesn’t match on episode number alone (leaving us with duplicate content in our Apple Podcasts listing). They’re (now) telling me they also need the tag in the feed, and I can’t find a way to add this with PowerPress.

Is this something easy to do? I looked around and couldn’t see a way to do it. Thanks!

limited to 50 podcasts with various providers

Hi, we have used SSP for a few years now, and seem to come up against this regularly: The podcast feeds (such as Apple Podcasts, Spotify, etc.) are only showing the past 50 episodes, for the most part. I cannot see any settings with those providers that would limit things, NOR do I see anything within SSP that would set that limit to 50… If you subscribe currently within Apple Podcasts (as an example), I currently see that “All Episodes” only show the feed going back to Episode 138 — the current Episode is 188 — exactly 50 episodes available, but none before 138. That is why it is so striking and leads me to believe that it must be a setting I’m overlooking?

Any thoughts/assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much.

Where to set Apple Podcasts Category

In category podcasting I can’t find the place to enter the Apple Podcasts categories for a particular podcast. Apple is insisting I have this selected in my RSS feed. Where do I enter the Apple categories info? Cannot validate feed until this is set.

I’ve been working on the Podcast Settings for this site. No matter what changes I make,
I get these error messages when I’m running the site through Apple’s podcastconnects (they’re under Show Details):

Description

Category
This field is required, enter it in your RSS.`

I’ve filled the description, category and copyright fields and I don’t see one for artist (although I’ve filled in author).

Any idea what I’m doing wrong?

BTW, when I run it through the Cast Feed Validator, I get this:

Feed Maximizer not working correctly for Apple Podcasts

After disabling “Optimize iTunes Summary from Blog Posts” and enabling Feed Episode Maximizer, I was able to get some of my episodes to display a shortened version of their blog post’s text as episode notes in Apple Podcasts. Strangely, this only applies to my last 100 episodes or so, and not even every single one. Older episodes show their entire blog post as episode notes.

I’ve confirmed this behavior in Apple Podcasts and Overcast, although Overcast at least preserves formatting while Apple Podcasts doesn’t. Stitcher condenses all episode notes down to about 150-250 characters. I can’t find anything different between episode posts in my feed that correctly abbreviate episode notes and ones that don’t.

I’m hoping to get all episodes to display shortened episode notes, not just the 100 most recent – both to keep my feed size low and to improve readability in the Apple Podcasts app.

Examples below. Both episodes’ blog posts use the same format and have roughly the same length of text.

Desired behavior: Episode 232 (https://www.xplainthexmen.com/2019/01/232-careful-with-that-axe-cerise/) shows the following episode notes in Apple Podcasts, using the first 1-sentence paragraph and ignoring the rest:

“In which tragedy strikes; leisure suits are underappreciated; Jubilee is fundamentally opposed to feelings; that MCU joke would definitely have been hilarious; we have trouble accepting Beast as a 20-something; when Gambit and Rogue work, they work; Wolverine makes an unlikely agony aunt; Dr. Strange was the mentor Illyana Rasputin really needed; and What If: Magik is pretty much a perfect comic.”

Undesired behavior: Episode 230 (https://www.xplainthexmen.com/2019/01/230-touchstones/) shows the following episode notes in Apple Podcasts, which are the full but unformatted episode post:

Apple Podcasts showing Season 1

Hello,

It was reported to us that the page above is suddenly showing “Season 1”, in Apple Podcasts. I am unable to find where to change the season settings in either the post or in the general settings, for the show. We are currently using version 8.4.7. Please let me know if there’s any additional information you need.
