What do _pingme & _encloseme do?

I was looking at my postmeta table to look at some of the custom fields I have been using. I saw that every post had a _pingme row and a _encloseme row (posts where I edited other fields had two rows of each).

What do these do? Why are they being made even though I am not specifying them when I make a new post? Is there a way to stop them from being made if I decide I don’t need them in my database?

I have a problem with my blog after i moved server.
i get this error MSG:

_encloseme and _pingme after uploading image

I am in the process of setting up my WordPress system. So far the installation went well, but when I try to post an image, I get this in my post: _encloseme: 1
_pingme: 1

Can somebody point me in the right directions, so I can get rid of them?

I’ve just upgraded to the new WP and whenever I make a new post _encloseme: 1 appears at the bottom.
In a previous post I posted a link to a file, then I deleted it and now at the bottom of that post I see enclosure: https://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/shows/rpms/radio3/privatepassions.rpm 41 audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin

When I go into either post to remove this the text isn’t there to remove….
A friend of mine had a similar problem – but it was a fresh install of WP. When she refreshed it disappeared.

Trouble with Custom Fields in 2.0

Just upgraded to 2.0. (Nice!) I went to add some custom fields to my post and the keys “_encloseme” and “_pingme” appeared without my permission. I attempted to edit the custom fields and they do not appear in the edit area. I deleted the post and started over. The unwanted fields are still there and I can’t get rid of them.
