Very simplistic (which to some people is good) but not only do I want one that supplements Gravatar but has user support, this one is abandoned.

A lot of people seem to think this replaces the former WP User Avatar… it does not.
First, it appears that support is seriously lacking here… look at the numerous support questions left unanswered. A couple that particularly interested me had to do with whether it was possible to allow users to upload their avatar from the frontend.
I do not give users access to the WordPress Admin User page. The old WP User Avatar had a nice simple shortcode which I could use on the frontend.
I find there is ZERO documentation here for this plugin and even looking through the code I can find NO shortcode for use on the frontend… so even though those support questions went unanswered, I can see why: there is NO support for user avatar uploads on the frontend.
So the bottom line is, if you’re looking for something that provides an interface for users on the frontend (like the old WP User Avatar), this plugin will NOT do what you need.
One User Avatar does.

Nice and simple plugin. Great replacement for the corrupt ProfilePress (previously WP User Avatar).

As other reviewers are commenting, I’m here after being tricked by the authors of a different avatar plugin. This is doing the job nicely.

I was using rival plugin WP User Avatar (no “s”) that just suddenly transformed into this ‘ProfilePress’ membership plugin adding a bunch of stuff I didn’t need, want or asked for.
WP User Avatars (this plugin, with an “s”) is light weight, functional and does what it says it will do. Please keep it this way…

Glad I found this lightweight replacement for WP User Avatar (no “s”). That plugin was recently changed extensively and rebranded as ProfilePress. I didn’t want or need all the stuff they added and am so happy that I found WP User Avatars (with an “s”). It’s such a good replacement and it does just what I need, which is to allow me to create custom avatars for my users and authors. Great work!

@johnjamesjacoby, I really hope you will continue to maintain and update “WP User Avatars” now that its main rival has turned into the unwanted and bloated “ProfilePress” – 40,000 new users need you.

I use UM, and users know how to upload their pix to their profile, but then their articles they author is unable to show their profile pix (in author boxes) because WP and plugins that offer author boxes only look in gravatar for image sources.
Another similarly named plugin (with 400k downloads) is unable to do what this plugin does so straight-forwardly.
I am loving JJJ plugins, and learning from them. Reminder to self, ensure you make a donation to this awesome contributor

Thank you so much for an out-of-the-box solution for replacing gravatar!

Works great. No conflicts at all and it breaks nothing. Set it, then forget it. So long, gravitars.

Been trying other plugins for hours to make user avatars available. Nothing worked – until I tried this one. Works flawlessly. Thank you.

This Plugin changes the user avatar individually. That’s what I was looking for. Thanks!

I have been looking for something to easily change the Admin avatar without using gravatar. This doesn’t, it just changes the default avatar, same as all the others.

Good point from Samatva, but I’m using it anyway.
Thanks.
(Just wanted to give 5*)

Very nice!!
Thanks

Works without any problems and is easy to use. Also integrates perfectly into the WordPress-API so plugin-authors can get the correct images via functions like get_avatar_url().

This plugin is great in that it allows all users to upload a custom avatar, and I trust there are no security implications. It has several shortcomings that make it a “no go” for my site.
The first problem is that it creates as many as 10 sizes of the avatar image – one modest test of a 512×512 .png file occupied a total of more than 320k of disk space in all the versions (images 26, 32, 52, 64, 96, 128, 192, 250, 500 pixels square), *plus* the space of the original image. In jpg format, it was smaller, but still close to 200k.
These do not show up in the media library (a plus and a minus) so there is no easy way that I can see to manage the huge number of photos we would end up with (other than to go to each user’s profile page…)
A test user I set up was able to directly upload a photo, no problem, but the displayed “Choose from Media” just took me to an eternally-rotating “wait” icon as that user did not have access to the media library.
The usermeta table also is filled with an array of the full URL of every size – this ends up being quite large. I could see this bogging down the type of listings I need to make (a school intranet – listing full lists of classes with avatars).
Seems to be an okay plugin, clean and simple for users, but I fear it would swamp even a modest site and end up as difficult to manage. There are trade offs made in every plugin, and some of those decisions won’t work for my site. If you have a small community site, this plugin will probably work great for you.

It works smoothly. Nice and clean.

Nice and clean.
I wish there was a short code to show the Avatar selection area on a page.
I just don’t like users having access to the WordPress Dashboard. It isn’t aesthetically pleasant to allow this.

Light-weight plugin, works exactly like it’s supposed to. Thumbs up!

I love it.
It integrates nicely in the default user page and makes an awesome pair with WP User Profiles
