WP Short URLs seems like a good upstart plugin. However in version 0.2 the redirections I created only led to the blog giving a 404 error. The blog is a near-vanilla 3.3.2 install, with permalink structure set to the predefined setting named “Post name” and with only the following plugins activated:

• BulletProof Security
• Short URL
• Types – Complete Solution for Custom Fields and Types
• WordPress HTTPS

Could this be affected by the permalink setting? It’s currently set to the default option called “Post name”.
