I develop web sites on private servers, then export them to the web. I needed this plugin to create a directory and file from within WordPress in order to set the user and group on the file system to what WordPress expects on my installation, “http”.

I couldn’t do this outside of WordPress because “http” is a special user and group that I could not access or change from the administration console of the server. The FileManager plugin allowed me to create the directory and file, which I then edit with WinSCP. WinSCP throws an error when I edit the file, but it still works and I’m able to move forward.

Uploading doesn’t work right. I can download a php file, make one change, and when I upload it the file-size will go from 1,000kb to 700,000kb and break pretty much everything. It took me a while to figure out it wasn’t botched coding on my part and ended up being a huge waste of time.
This plugin also does not give me the option to edit, there’s just a blank spot for where the edit button is supposed to be.

The only plugin I used to download DAILY while doing work on my clients’ sites. Almost on every clients site I install this plugin.

This plugin comes handy especially if the client is hesitant to send us FTP access. Some of our client doesn’t even know what FTP really means… lol!

My suggestion to author
Currently while uploading files, it overwrites automatically if the same file name exits. So before overwriting it should notify us.

I’m currently testing this on WP v3.6.
All is working well so far.

This plugin is extremely useful for allowing clients to manage files on my server (within their domain).
I didn’t want to force my clients to download and learn Firezilla for FTP access.

Your plugin is just what I was searching for!
The customization options are especially useful.
I modified my settings to allow my Client to only see and edits the files he needs to, so that he doesn’t “mess around” with other important files.

I really think you guys can reach far with this Plugin.
Once you improve some things and give it a nice layout, you should reach the masses with this.

Lots of useful options for different kinds of workflows, in my scenario i have moved thousands of docs/pdfs from a legacy site and need the site admins to manage all of that content without ever touching media library (nightmare!).

This does the job, and lets me as a developer ensure that it’s secure and easy to use.

I think if the author could improve the default design and clean it up, even more people would use it.

One small problem I ran into is that all of my files/categories are showing up in my sidebar, even though i have never enabled the widget for it. Is this a bug or just me?

Tested WP-Filemanager 1.3.0 with WordPress 3.5.1 , unfortunately it doesn’t work.
I tried renaming a manually created template file (home.php) which I uploaded earlier via a FTP-Client (FileZilla 3.6.0.2), but the filename stayed unchanged, also after refreshing and verifying with my FTP-Client.

This was exactly the plugin I was looking for: if you need to quickly access a file in the WordPress tree without using FTP or your web space’s legacy file manager, then wp-FileManager will do the trick nicely and quickly. Good work!

This plugin allows me to edit my clients WordPress files without having to request FTP access from them (which they usually dont even know what it is). Would be nice to see it use ajax for loading directories, this way you would not need to do a page reload for each directory change.
