We tried this multiple times but not working. It has some conflict with hosting and our hosting company suggests not to use this plugin. It wasted so many hours in the process and now I need to find another alternative.

I remember the time when this plugin was partially useless, but today I managed to export all of my posts and images easily and import them to my new installation. So, there was no need for a 3rd party plugin.
This is useful for cluttered databases: when you transfer all your posts and images to new installation, then your database will have nothing but posts and images. Light and fast.

Works very well indeed!

Good for the main use cases: restore from backup, and moving posts between blogs. Unfortunately the image import doesn’t seem to work (WordPress 6.3 with plugin 0.8.1), which makes it a pain to clean up image-heavy posts.
One thing I’d like to do with this that I can’t is to import another copy of a cross-post and merge the comment threads. As it is, the best I can do is import the duplicate copy and then use another plugin (or dig into the database) to move the comments around.

Needed to copy the content of the old website to the one which is developed from scratch – and it worked!

I’ve used this just a few times in the past 18 months. And one time it was an incredible, urgent need as there were no server backups available from a web host (not with them anymore). Another time I made a mistake and deleted some comments.
Anyway, this is only the 2nd review for this plugin within the past year or so. And I see a lot of negative scored posts. After reading them, I noticed a number of the 1-star reviews seemed to be user error. I’ve been in IT Management, development, and consulting for 4 decades. I use very little custom coding on my sites because, in my past experience, there are far less issues during updates and upgrades. So, with that said, I have also noticed there are a lot of optional settings to decide when using this tool. And many are preselected that I unselect. I recommend taking your time when using this tool and defining your own settings every time you use it.
I use about 20 plugins and there’s no interference with any of them. But, I am careful about which plugins I retain. Also, I use this plugin just create backups or to perform restores from them. Then, I uninstall it until I need it again. For example, I’m here today because I’m getting ready to use it again as I’m about to make some major category changes. It will be very handy to use this tool to perform backups (and any needed restores) instead of using a site restore that will reset recent work on posts or pages.
I use this as an additional backup and as an archive for all my sites. It’s always saved me when I needed it and I’ve found it to be reliable and solid. It’s been absolutely perfect for me when performing work on tags and categories so I don’t have to use a site restore.

I love this plugin. Super easy to use and works as expected for a “free” plugin.
Not sure why there are so many bad reviews as this plugin is super helpful.
My guess/assumption on the bad reviews is that people are having issues with their webhost and that is reflected in their experience/reviews with this plugin???

This is a very useful plugin and a must-have within every WordPress instance. There is one thing I hoped the latest update to version 0.8 would have fixed. Unfortunately not.
If you have to refresh your WordPress Website, you can export all content with these PlugIn and also import it in your fresh install. Works great!
BUT, why is the nesting of categories flattened after import? I’d be so damn happy if this PlugIn would keep the structure of nested categories in the next update, that I’d rate it with 5 stars ??
I’m using a PlugIn that depends on nested categories. As this PlugIn created thousands of categories that would require days of work to nest that categories as it is supposed to be. So I can’t do a WordPress refresh for that website, even though it’s more than overdue.
Please make importing content from WordPress to WordPress keep the nesting of categories for all post types’ categories…

This plugin is still linked within WP 6 in the Tools tab. I just used it to transfer my blog to a new web host. Then Wordfence told me it was probably abandoned. Shock.
Hey, WordPressdotorg, you may want to give this a look over and certify it for the most recent version.

It’s a great plugin but it doesn’t look like the code is being maintained anymore. That’s not cool for such an important plugin.
“hasn’t been tested with the latest 3 major releases of WordPress”
Is there an alternative that works in the same way? I’d rather be using a plugin that I know won’t die with the next WP or PHP upgrade.

Oldies but Goldie’s!
Does what it’s supposed to, no more, no less.
Caution: Elements that were already published, are also public immediately after import ??

This is an official plugin, why don’t the official developer do compatibility testing and update Tested up to: header to the latest core version?

When importing custom post type it always assigns current user as author, regardless of selected user in the mapping settings. Really disappointing.

Browser loading says it all. Not fit for purpose for any serious sites, or sites with more than a few posts or pages. This is a feature that should have been updated long time ago, and barely qualifies as a marketing feature for a small personal blogger. Please update both the exporter and importer to ensure that it is fit for purpose

Relies on the browser loading while processing. This needs to be rewritten. We are on 2020. Sometimes increasing timeout is not possible!
It should NOT load on the browser level but have a loading bar that shows the process on the dashboard itself.

I’m giving this two stars not one, because previous attempts left half the images behind, but I have now at least managed to get all the posts and all the images into the new WordPress site… from the previous WordPress.com site. Horrible though. Had to split a relatively small blog (55 posts) into 11 blocks, get my host to raise the timeout massively, change PHP settings, deactivate everything in sight… and I still had to push through 503 errors, STILL getting timeouts after (e.g.) 10 minutes importing a block of 5 posts, re-running several of the imports…
But the worst thing is that it pulled down two copies of each image, creating a second unattached copy of the thumbnail and displaying that rather than the ‘real’ image, which is then viewable by clicking on the thumbnail. Some thumbnails also then displayed bigger than they are, so fuzzy too. Going to have to go through every post manually, replacing the ‘ghost’ image with the real one, and then deleting it. Just hoping ALL the images really are there. If it turns out the blog author didn’t always link to the media file, I may find some are missing and have to back and look for them.
Horrible horrible horrible… and that’s going from a WordPress blog to a WordPress blog… what can be so hard?!

Importing a couple dozen posts including attachments: ✓
Importing a couple dozen pages including attachments: ✓
Importing ~100 media files including attachments: ✗ HTTP 503
.
I’ve tried disabling leech & hotlinking protection on the source domain. I’ve tried increasing the PHP memory_limit
to 512MB, max_execution_time
to 0 (unlimited), max_input_time
to -1 (same as max_ececution_time
), post_max_size
to 128MB, upload_max_filesize
to 128MB. Note that the media files I was attempting to import were less than 100MB combined. But I kept getting a HTTP 503
.
The way I eventually got around it was as follows: start the import of media, including attachments. When it fails, do it again, but this time without attachments. You will get a list showing you which media files were actually imported already and which haven’t been imported. Now edit the xml
file and remove all entries (delimited by <item>
…</item>
) that have already been imported.
Start the media import again, with the edited xml
file and include attachments. If it fails again, repeat the import but without attachments. Note files already imported, remove from xml
file, rinse and repeat.
Tedious? Perhaps. This plugin’s fault? I honestly don’t know. My cheap hoster’s fault? Entirely possible. My skills not being as good as I think they are? Definitely an option.
But was it the quickest way to get the job done? Yes, for me it was. Hopefully this information can help someone else. Or perhaps at least it’ll help the plugin author to make this plugin more foolproof ??

Timing out on a perfectly healthy VPS after importing only 25 posts and their media attachments.
Have to workaround by migrating to a locally hosted site, then using a working migrator tool to the online site.
Could there be an option to split XML into smaller chunks?
I realise this is difficult to get to work everywhere, but I always advise people starting out a website and not sure how much effort they will put in to start a wordpress.com site, and its easy to upgrade. Thats a big part of what makes wordpress such a great platform for all kinds of users. When its so difficult to migrate to a self hosted wordpress, then its the opposite just a pain in the butt.

Mostly works for unmodified exports of simple things, but easily breaks when the XML is formatted slightly differently (but still valid), or when the content being exported is somewhat non-standard.
