Everything was great until the next day. Twenty hours after installation, the media gallery showed over 700 copies of the wc-square-gift-card-placeholder.png and growing. It was multiplying like bunnies. A support ticket to Automatic got a few responses. Once they mentioned that this was a known bug and they would make a note of it, they stopped answering emails. Upon some digging, this “bug” has been “known” for quite a while. They should pull this plugin off until it is fixed.

A Masterclass in Frustration
Adding to the already detailed negative review, here’s a compilation of further criticisms based on widespread feedback from other users across various platforms:
Square for WooCommerce Review: A Masterclass in Frustration
The Square for WooCommerce plugin is not just a disappointment; it’s an outright failure in modern e-commerce solutions. This integration supposedly designed to simplify the management of online and physical stores instead multiplies the workload and exasperates its users.
Many users echo the sentiment that this plugin remains perpetually in a beta state, never fully delivering on its promises. Retailers find themselves trapped in a vicious cycle of managing dual inventories manually due to the plugin’s inability to selectively sync products. If you have more than a handful of products or operate multiple locations, this plugin becomes a hinderance rather than a help.
A common grievance among the users is the plugin’s poor handling of product images and descriptions, requiring store owners to update each platform individually—defeating the purpose of an integration meant to save time. This issue is compounded by the plugin’s notorious single-image limitation, which necessitates additional uploads for every product, an archaic feature that users find bewildering in the age of multi-media online retail.
The lack of integration for Square Loyalty is another sore point. Customers cannot view or redeem their loyalty points on WooCommerce, creating a disjointed experience that undermines customer retention strategies and complicates marketing efforts.
The handling of taxes is particularly problematic. The plugin’s inability to manage inclusive tax options properly has led to incorrect charges at checkout, infuriating customers and complicating financial reporting for businesses. This issue is especially critical in regions with stringent tax compliance regulations.
Support—or the lack thereof—has been a major point of contention. User forums and review sites are awash with complaints about the non-responsive and unhelpful support team, which often resorts to generic responses. The overwhelming feeling is one of abandonment, with users feeling left to fend for themselves amidst a sea of unresolved issues and unaddressed bugs.
Perhaps the most damning feedback comes from the long wait times for essential updates. The glacial pace at which improvements are made, if ever, suggests a lack of commitment from the developers. The addition of Gift Cards, a basic feature that took over eight years to implement, is frequently cited as emblematic of the plugin’s slow and unresponsive development cycle.
In sum, the Square for WooCommerce plugin is widely regarded as a liability rather than an asset. The litany of unresolved issues, combined with sluggish updates and ineffective support, has led many users to seek alternatives. As a solution partner and retailer, the consensus is clear: this plugin is unfit for serious e-commerce and should be avoided by any retailer who values efficiency, reliability, and customer satisfaction.

I’ve had just about every issue mentioned in the negative reviews. I was able to work through most of them. A lot of the issues people had were due to the poor documentation from Square.
Except for one issue. About 15% of my the items on my site got set to quantity 0. And this happened right before an event. This is absolutely terrible. I’ll be removing this from my website after the event is over and never use square again.

Don’t let the negative reviews discourage you from at least giving this plugin a try! Speaking only from my own experience, I find the product synchronisation between Square and WooCommerce to be more reliable and intuitive than I had been led to believe, and I’m very pleased with the plugin.
My one request is the addition of the ability to pay via Square Gift Cards in the block based checkout, as this is currently preventing me from using the block checkout on a couple sites.

To the Developers of this plugin:
I had it a previous version in a different site and it worked perfectly. However, when I installed directly via the “Add Plugin” within WordPress, I noticed two issues immediately:
Issue #1: Message in www.remarpro.com Repository message is “Warning:?This plugin?has not been tested?with your current version of WordPress.”
Issue #2: Once the plugin was activated, it shows two “Configure” links. This maybe causing issues with choosing location as that field is “blank” on both “Configure” links in the plugin.
Below is a plain text copy of what the plugin displays:
“
WooCommerce Square
Configure | Configure | Docs | Support | Review | Deactivate
Adds ability to sync inventory between WooCommerce and Square POS. In addition, you can also make purchases through the Square payment gateway.
Version 4.5.1 | By WooCommerce | View details

My version of WordPress: Current version: 6.4.3

Woocommerce: Version 8.6.1
Please advise as I love this plugin before.
Thanks.

Square has been nothing but a delight for us. We have been using it as a payment gateway for years and it has never failed. We’re only just starting to use it to sync products, but so far so good. In our case, we’re just pushing products up to our Square POS from WooCommerce, and only want orders to come back through Woo. So, a lot of the issues people have described aren’t relevant to us. However, we have had complexities/issues with Square otherwise, and their support seems fine. I’m really not sure what all the complaining is about.

it’s not showing the credit card fields on anyone else’s screen, only a logged in admins screen.

I’ve been using this plugin for about 6 months so far, and you really have to spend time with it to learn the nuances of how it works when maintaining product syncing between Square and Woo. I use it to control the inventory/products so they are in sync between my brick & mortar store and my Woo online store. I have over 2,000 products so it’s a lot of work…
The plugin works (again, spend time and learn it’s nuances), BUT, it could use some basic much needed improvements:
1) Please build in a selective sync ability (for new products, and for updating products). When you have a lot of products (whether it’s 100 or 1,000+), you have to wait for it to parse through the entireeeeee product line as it looks for new and/or updated products. Depending on your server, it can take up way too long, and I mean way too long. For me it’s a 45 minute process when syncing new products in (and that’s without checking the “updated products as well” button. If not a selective sync – at least have a button on the Woo side that allows a individual product sync, and when running “sync new products”, let us not have to sit through the entire product wait time until it gets to the end and adds the new ones. Have it only look from a certain date forward?
2) Please use some sort of secondary ID/key, or index 2 fields, or something other than just relying on the SKU when determining the sync connection between Square and Woo for a product. PLEASE. I’ll give you a real world example that plagues me constantly. I have certain products that I manually add to Square, and some that are auto-imported into Square from wholesale marketplaces (Faire dot com for example). Awesome, but… Faire uses product codes, not barcode skus. So, if I have run a sync before updating to the barcode sku (happens all the time, I constantly have new products coming in), and then at some point I update the sku – it breaks the connection between the product and it causes me a lot of headaches. I have some suppliers that change the barcode numbers on same products, which breaks the connection. I can’t keep up. Please use some other way to keep the connection between Square/Woo in addition to just using the sku, that way if a sku changes, it can change that field with the product syncing as well.
These 2 changes alone would bump my 3 star to a 5 star.

This plugin has been a perpetual headache and a big part of it I think is on the Square side where if a product is deleted that deletion doesn’t come over to the site so customers are still able to purchase products that are no longer available.
I get constant complaints about this specific plugin not working properly and we’re fed up to the point where we’re writing our own script to sync inventory counts. We’d advised our client to move the website’s payment processing to Stripe and remove this plugin entirely.
Square won’t support it because it’s not an official Square and Woocommerce seems to allow complaints to fall on deaf ears. No thanks.

For those items ordered online, and paid by credit card, there is no problem with integration (once setup).
for any orders with local pickup or pay on delivery, WooCommerce requires their own payment method, rendering this app uselsss

Doesn’t work with Woocommerce subscription unless you manually create invoices and input each customer manually. What’s the use? Square REALLY needs to catch up with online transactions.

Had to login to say how bad this plugin is. Surprised that square is so big and woocommerce is so big. they combined their size with creating the biggest turd possible

The plug in works seamlessly on our website. We did have a hiccup in our unique instance due to integration with AvaTax. The WordPress Support team is truly the best and got the issue resolved by working with Avalara and Square — which feels unheard of. The WordPress Support folks were also extremely responsive and kept me updated as this complicated issue was resolved.
Obviously any plug in has its quirks, and implementation can differ based on each website’s unique set up. Rest assured, the WordPress team will be stellar if there are any issues. It took a while, but we got there and well worth the time and effort to me. WordPress support did all of the heavy lifting and had very thorough followthrough.

These idiots blocked my account simply because I made a test purchase from myself in the amount of one dollar! I wrote to them in support about this, but they told me that everything is fair! No wonder why they have such an overall rating. Just don’t mess with them at all, you’ll just waste your time with them if you’re not on their favorites list.

The team had a fast response when I had an issue and I was able to resolve it with them quickly. Great support and definitely recommend this plugin if you need square integration with WooCommerce.

I’ve tried several payment processors and various website builders over the years. This year I decided to give Square and WordPress a try. I rebuilt my existing website in using Woocommerce and WordPress, then connected this Square plug-in. My first few transactions were flagged as potential fraud, but after a couple weeks everything was running smoothly.
I’ve started using Square contracts, and Square appointments. Square makes everything integrate so nicely into their systems, I don’t see myself switching elsewhere anytime soon.

I came back here to update this review and I am leaving it at one star. This is a completely useless integration if you need stock management to function properly. I overcame server side load issues and got the stock to sync to square, but it did not update the quantities on square, AND TEHN it mirrored the zero inventory Square items BACK TO WOOCOMMERCE. Avoid this idiotic pile of random trash. Support is equally useless, let me save you some time: They will ask you to change your theme to stock (idiocy) and if that doesnt “magically” fix things they will ask for your credentials. You’ll speak to multiple people so sharing credentials seems completely stupid, but this is their workflow.
Please: go here and choose ANYTHING else. https://learnwoo.com/best-woocommerce-square-plugins/
If you have a third party solution that actually works and offers real support please name it. It’s not this.

One of the things that has most fascinated me is how bad and buggy WooCommerce/Automatic’s own plugins are compared to 3rd party plugins. This plugin is no exception. It straight up doesn’t work. You click Connect login fine, and then when you click the redirect back to site button you get the -very helpful- WordPress error “invalid action”. I installed WP Easy Pay Square plugin and the same process worked just fine.
EDIT: Plugin no longer produces this error, which was caused by Object Cache Pro plugin, but other similar-functioning plugins were not affected at all.

This plugin makes my life so much easier by just using my Square account for payment processing. Just READ THE INSTRUCTIONS and you will be just fine. I think many of the issues people have is they just put things together without going through it all first, especially with complicated product catalogs.
If you have a simple product catalog, this is a great option for you!

There was no issue setting up the plugin or importing the products. It worked great for me.

The version 3.0 simply doesn’t work. I’ve ended up restoring the previous version. Customers couldn’t process their order and there were two input CC input fields, duplicates. Not leaving this on auto-update anymore.

My store doesn’t need to manage, so we we have it set to not manage. variations only sync with import and always set themselves “Out of Stock”
