Once upon a time this plugin may have been great. It is definitely not the case anymore. Just add it to your site and run it through Google’s PageSPeed Insights and your mobile score will plummet! It shows up in so many categories as a problem.
So sad that this plugin isn’t supported by the engineers given how popular PayPal is ??

I installed it despite so many negative reviews thinking it can’t be that bad. Oh God, it instantly crashed my site on activation with many Fatal Type errors.
Upon a brief peek at the code, the Whole thing needs to be coded again from scratch.

There is a big bug in version 2.9.3. I checked this thoroughly!
There is a long delay in providing plugin updates.

For Paypal or credit card payments it works well.

Utterly useless. It’s 50/50 whether my customers can actually manage to complete their order or not, with random and unexplained payment rejections and checkout loops. The backend constantly nags as well.
I have long preferred people pay through Square because it’s cheaper, and it just works. Paypal give absolutely no useful support or documentation for the errors, so I’m probably going to ditch it completely. I’ve had enough with customer complaints for what should be the easiest bit of the website!

Bad service and overpriced fees, no good money-value, after 10 years of used decided to stop using Paypal due to high fees, low service quality and other alternatives more affordable and better quality.

If you threw your 90 year old grandma down the stairs she’d still be more functional than this plugin. It’s impossible to set up. Supposedly Pay Later is available out of the box, but I can’t see it at check out. I try to turn on various features from the woocommerce payment settings and it sends me to the paypal website telling you “Everything’s ready to go! Now set it up on your website.” cyclical non-sense. Please get a product manager and fix the product.

I have been using WordPress and WooCommerce for years on many websites. I’ve certainly seen my fair share of poor plugins but none as bad as this. While PayPal is a trusted name by consumers, I feel they continue to build a bad name amongst business owners who actually implement their payment platform to the end consumers; this plugin being yet another way which PayPal is tarnishing their established brand trust.
Systemic Code Design Flaws!
The core issue with this plugin lies in their fundamental approach to coding and integration with WordPress and WooCommerce. Instead of adhering to the established conventions and best practices that ensure compatibility and smooth operation, the developers have chosen to implement solutions in some of the most shortsighted and incompatible ways imaginable. This isn’t just a few isolated bugs–it’s about a systemic disregard for the principles of WordPress plugin development and absolute basic coding standards.
Continuous Stream Of Bugs
This plugin is riddled with bugs that are not just minor inconveniences but significant obstacles to running an online store smoothly. One day your checkout might be working, the next its not. You might have discrete bugs that only affect a subset of customers and these bugs go unknown until the one-in-a-thousand customers actually bother to report it. The non-conformity of this plugin leads to widespread issues, including conflicts with other plugins, JavaScript errors and unpredictable behaviour on the checkout. Instead of providing timely fixes or acknowledging the need to align with WordPress standards, they often dismiss valid concerns or offer workarounds or early-releases that break on the next update. I have tried this plugin a few times in the last few years, it’s always got different ways to break.
Use Another PayPal Plugin
For a payment gateway especially, it’s disappointing to see such a lack of adherence to essential coding standards and best practices. Until the developers undertake a comprehensive overhaul to address these systemic issues and align their plugin with WordPress conventions, I cannot recommend it, absolutely not, I took the time to write this review to warn others to stay away!
With the fee’s that PayPal charge then merchants deserve a reliable, well-supported plugin to facilitate the payments over PayPal. Merchants shouldn’t be loosing customers over PayPal due to their buggy checkout and waste thousands of dollars in developer time to diagnose & fix checkout problems.

Very unhappy with Paypal. Been using them for years but recently they did not protect me from fraud. Will no longer support this company or recommend them. They threatened me and I was the victim! Disgusting.

I tried going through the support forum after getting my site back up, thanks to IONIS. I found how to submit a request, but it asks for a status report, which I copied and pasted, but the button to submit was greyed out so I couldn’t send it. I looked for a phone number, and couldn’t find one. I finally found out if I upgraded, I could get support. Why give a free product if you don’t intend to support it? I cannot use WooCommerce PayPay because of this issue.

The new update results in the error “There has been a critical error on this website”. Had to bring back the site with a backup and lost some work I did that day. Are these things even tested before they are uploaded? Because I’ve never had an update crash my entire site like this.

I didn’t want to install this after reading the reviews, but was forced to by WooCommerce. It worked fine for years until a few days ago. The latest update caused “There has been a critical error on this website. Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions.” The entire site is now down.
The email sent me to a WordPress recovery mode, which reactivated the site, but payments were not working. I reactivated the plugin and problems came back, site is down. I went back to recovery mode, turned off recovery mode and I get “Recovery Mode not initialized.” with no way to get out of this. Woo provides no useful way to get out of this. except for boxed advice for simple issues, there is no support for issues caused by crappy coding. No human interface for something not easily boxed.
I’m completely disappointed. I have influence with several WooCommerce websites and will not be recommending WooCommerce in the future.

I’m surprised that this plugin has the signature of WooCommerce development team. It’s full of bugs on each update.

We had a hack that happened that then allowed the bad guys to change the paypal email and secret keys with an automation. It changed 2-3 times a day, even when we would block it and then it would turn off our Stripe account. I’m not saying this plugin was the cause… that is still under investigation by our malcare team, but when we finally deleted this plugin from our site, the problem appears to have gone away. Be very careful if you decide to use this plugin and pay attention to make sure your sales are actually coming to you. I don’t think we will be re-installing this one anytime soon.

Without meaning any offense and a well understanding of the sheer complexity of software development, but this plugin is just a nightmare.
After upgrading the plugin to the newest version, paypal quick checkout adds additional shipping costs within its modal – even if they are already included within the gross price of the order. This results in the well-known order notes about payment maybe being overcharged which you find a lot of tickets within this support forum.
The “original” checkout with Paypal does not work at all anymore, resulting in an error message that tells the user that something went wrong and he shall switch to a different payment method. The logs are also very generic and don’t help you to understand what the problem is and you as a developer could possibly do to fix it.
An absolute nightmare if you have been running an onlineshop and such things happen, especially if you maintain it for a client.
I find it hard to understand how one of the world’s leading eCommerce software vendors releases a plugin of such poor quality for one of the most common payment gateways.

We’re still developing the site at the minute so a long way to go but after hitting a few snags early on I have to say the support has been amazingly good. (The snags were all down to our custom theme, not the plugin, but Krystian and the Syde support team fixed each issue in turn using a staging environment). All I can say is that payments are now going through fine in Sandbox mode and the support to get here has been rapid. I was very sceptical having seen all the low reviews but I genuinely can’t understand where those are coming from.

Despite the excellent support, they haven’t been able to provide a fix or even a clarification about our issue.
Unfortunately, we’re losing 50% to 60% of renewal orders because they are failing.
There is no consistency in the logs, making it difficult to understand the reasons for the failed payments.
The process to trigger a renewal payment is either unclear or not functioning correctly, as it is not triggering the renewal requests.
In summary, I would advise caution when considering this plugin, as it may negatively impact your business.

Easy integration and plugin working well so far. Support team were fabulous in helping me troubleshoot an issue in passing booking fees from checkout to payment gateway. Thank you so much.

I hate the new WooCommerce PayPal Payments Plugin, the big ugly buttons are not removable, you can’t customize them? they ruin your layout and UI. It literally affects my conversions and stops sales!! Useless. I am going back to a third party plugin, or rather just stop using PayPal all together.

At first, I thought it was just me. But it should never be that hard to connect woo commerce to Paypal. Now I know why this has a two-star average. Do yourself a favor and use an alternate PayPal plugin. I found one that took 5 minutes to set up and everything still works great.

Terrible, I keep getting phone calls being told “I must upgrade” but it breaks my whole website’s UI, stop calling me, I am using a different plugin and it works perfectly.

I’m new to WordPress and Woocommerce for 2 months, and while I have had a shopping cart using paypal for 15 years, when testing woocommerce with paypal sandbox, I had two issues.
The first was I did NOT want to have my customers HAVE to have a Paypal account. In trying to ‘disable’ the automatic paypal create account tab, I had mis-read that disabling the paypal account optional tab in my paypal business account, actually forced a paypal account to be created. I did not even want the Optional account question to appear on the payment screen. I thought that disabling the paypal account optional button, would not even have the question arise to be selected or not. However, disabling the button, forces Paypal registration.
I worked with WOO Paypal Payments support, and they quickly helped me realize my mistake, which was not related to their plugin.
The second thing WOO Paypal Payments plugin support did was help me tailor the banner to ‘remove Pay Later, and VENMO’ options, as I only wanted to offer Paypal standard and CC or Debit Cards.
Again, the above problem was not directly related to Woo Paypal Payments plugin, but support quickly helped me obtain the banner I wanted.
Thank you

We recently discovered that the vaulting feature in this plugin resulted in multiple duplicate order payments and also declined payments showing as processed by PayPal erroneously showing as processed in Woocommerce on our clients site – even sending transaction IDs back to the site. It also caused problems on a 2nd client site.
We were able to reproduce the errors, documented it, and submitted our documentation in a ticket to Woocommerce over a month ago at woocommerce.com / my-account / contact-support / .
About $30,000 are now missing due to this issue, and PayPal is trying to blame this plugin.
But Woocommerce has not responded to our ticket. We actually submitted more than one ticket after we did not receive any response to the first ticket. But still no response from Woocommerce. We did not even receive email confirmations to our tickets.
That is the worse part of this whole ordeal – that there appears to be no support for this plugin.
I remember a time we used to be able to chat live with Woocommerce support – what is happening?
I am posting this here in hopes it elicits a response from Woocommerce. But now that I am here I am seeing support links to syde.com – who is accountable for this software? confusing as hell…

working well. But the changes wordpress has made and WooCommerce make themes trickier due to outdated code and needing to redo things that broke.

If you want to pay with only paypal, this is your plugin. Once credit cards are involved, you’re shot. Doesn’t work.
I added this plugin for a client who already has a business account. The account is well established so I figured this would be a breeze……..
The account was quickly approved for advanced processing, but unfortunately, after checking the box for include credit cards and selecting advance processing, I couldn’t connect/activate the account because Japan isn’t listed as an option within the country/region drop down in the PayPal modal – despite it being listed on PayPals website.
Nonetheless, I figured I’d settle for the standard processing. 12 hours later, I’m still at it….I cannot, for the life of me, get this credit card button to show.
I swear I’ve tried just about everything…I’ve disabled all themes, all plugins, I’ve read just about all the documentation, I’ve watched countless tutorials – which always just works by connecting their paypal account within woocomerce.
So you might get lucky. But if you’re like me, and you don’t, you’ll sink countless hours and make no progress.
