Works fine with WordPress 5.2.4 and Vanilla 2.8.1. Likely works with upgraded versions of both. Any comments about it not working, either have other problems going on, outdated versions of software, or incorrect configuration.
Read the install instructions and enjoy easy SSO with this plugin. Developers, thank you for updating this!

Plugin not working, can’t change page url, youtube video is outdated and the embed only creates an empty page.

This plugin does not change with wordpress changes or Vanilla app changes. There are bugs in the current version having to do with SSO and role propagation and the company has taken the position they don’t support SSO for the open source community. We are moving to Discourse.
‘edit: 10102018’ I’m adding back a star to my review. It’s true most of what I said, but I figured out the Role Propagation issue after months of looking for an answer. Adding back a star. Would be nice if Vanilla cared about us plug-in users though.

I’ve tested about every method of integrating a forum into WordPress websites. I’ve used plugin forums, standalone forums as separate sites, and standalone forums in iFrames.
So far it looks like Vanilla might be the best solution, the easiest and best-integrated.
So why four-stars instead of five? You can add sub-forums to forums, but you cannot group forums into true categories in the same way that mainstream forum software does. There is a Vanilla plugin to address this but the plugin is many years old, has reported bugs, and was never released as a stable version.

We’ve managed to make it work for SSO based authorization on a VF forum (with users logging in/registering via a WP site), but had a lot of troubles with bad UI, unexpected errors, not really decent documentation.

This plugin allows you to have people register on your blog and takes that same information to register them also on your vanilla forums. It’s automatic for them.
I am using the free open source version of vanilla forums and this set up with some reading and common sense. Nobody has tried to sell me anything and the plugin works as intended with the open source version of Vanilla.
You will also need the JSConnect plugin from Vanilla forums Plugin page for single sign on. Setting this up is pretty self explanatory.
A great plugin.

Ok so i have everything set up perfectly but still have one MAJOR issue, Permalinks. If i don’t have my permalinks set to default the forums displays a 404 not found. I don’t want to use default permalinks so i guess im not using vanilla forums sadly until this is fixed.

Not worth the hassle, plus its a paid service and dosnt integrate in all themes, BB press is a lot better in my opinion

It needs to be more clear that this plugin is simply an integration add on if you already are paying for a vanilla forums subscription. There is no way to set this up as a stand alone tool on your site.

Once you’ve worked out how this plugin works, and what its dependencies are, it works a treat. Contrary to some comments on here, you don’t need to sign up for a paid hosted forum. You can, but you can also use this with the free open source GPL, self hosted Vanilla forum software that you can download from vanillaforums.org.
In addition to installing this plugin in wordpress, you will also need to install a plugin for vanilla forum called jsconnect. This plugin will not work if your vanilla forum does not have that installed. I also installed a plugin called ‘jsconnect auto’, which automatically logs a user into the forum if jsconnect detects they are logged in to wordpress. This makes for a smoother user experience if you have a 1-to-1 SSO setup. If you want your forum to support SSO from multiple sources, you may not want that.
Next, you might get an error in your wordpress config, under Vanilla forum -> Setup, which says
Couldn’t find a Vanilla Forum at this url :/
. If all you want is the SSO, ignore this and try setting up the Vanilla forum -> Single Sign-on page. This worked for me even though I still get the above error. I didn’t bother with the embed forum feature or the comment integration. One of the three widgets doesn’t seem to work. Maybe this is related to the Couldn’t find error.

This is one of the best forums that I ever see and works great on wordpress.
My only complaint is that the forum is a little complicated.

Vanilla is a nice forum but this plugin just doesn’t work.
WP members can’t get access to the forum.
Inserting the forum into WP doesn’t work.
So don’t waste your time…………

I’ve spent 3+ hours trying to get Vanilla to use WP users on file – no luck.
Hopefully this plug-in will work some day but until then I’m using Simple:Press where they know what the heck they are doing……….

Before you think plugin is broken, make sure the issue isn’t your host. If you are getting “Couldn’t find a Vanilla Forum at this url :/”, it has to do with your server and access to curl. This post at the Vanilla Forum explains it best:

Happy commenting

This is a subscription service. Do not download unless you plan to sign up and pay monthly for it!

This plugin is only an attempt to get you to sign up and should say so before downloading. I am so sick of these that I have just created an account to start giving feedback ( I know that I should have been doing all along for the benefits of the community but I am lazy by nature ). Don’t download unless you want to sign up…
