Sounded like a good premis but when I installed it, it just locked up my wordpress completely. Had to delete the text file widget plugin directory to recover.

Yes, I know I’m biased – I wrote it, but I’m using this on my site and it works fine.
I’ve tested this on 4.3 beta 4, and it works there, too.. so I’ve hopefully skipped the php v4 constructor deprecation issue.
