My initial review is below the dashed line.
Thank you for the follow up Joakim. Given what the WP world has gone through during the past 36 or so hours, I understand what happened. This morning I made sure my sites were fully updated to WP 6.4.1. I downloaded the newest version of Simple: Press Forum. Installation was smooth, not even the slightest of hiccups.
I am changing my rating from 1 star to 5 star based on your excellent customer service.
Now I can start exploring Simple: Press Forum.
———————————————
I can’t remember the last time I gave a plugin only 1 star. I read reviews and looked carefully at their website. Despite the high price and some negative reviews, I thought I would give it a try. Downloaded and installed it. As soon as I pressed Activate it crashed my site.
Thank goodness for WP Recovery Mode. I was able to quickly get back into the site and copy the error code and information which I then submitted to their support.
This morning I received what basically amounted to a “solve it yourself” response. They suggested I buy the pro version and then they would help me. I’ve done that with other plugins but this one failed instantly. Why would I risk my time and money buying the pro version?
Interestingly, some of the poor reviews I initially disregarded described a very similar problem. Guess I should have paid attention to them.
My advice, stay away from this plugin. Here is the error which crashed my site.
This plugin failed to load properly and is paused during recovery mode.

I am new to WordPress and was looking for something that I could manage with my limited knowledge, SimplePress does that. I created a site in my spare time in a few short weeks. Buying the product really makes it worth your while and investment. The library of plugins for this app is extensive and easy to manage. Support has been very responsive as well. Keep up the good work!

keep wordpress updated is always a nightmare. the forum itself is good.

I have been using Simple Press for years and am gratefull they continued this plugin. Easy to use and given you have to pay for the extra’s. But in my opinion it is worth the investment.

I’ve used Simple:Press to manage a forum that’s very important to my business for years.
The mix of built-in features and plugins does everything we need a forum to do.
The free version works fine. I suggest one of the paid levels so you have access to more support. The basic product is very simple to install and use, but there are a lot of plugins and nice options. You’ll find the best of those faster with the help of the community.

Simple Press broke our setup.
“There has been a critical error on your website. Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions.”
Simple Press has professionally created website but the product itself in our case was crap. Perhaps it may work, or not (like in our case).
Please note that this is just one experience. But remember to take backup before installation…

Great.
I’ve been using Simple-Press for 6 years and I can only be thankful for having created such a complete plugin.
Congratulations.

Client was unhappy with bbpress and we successfully migrated their huge forum over to Simplepress. Excellent support throughout the process. Really the only viable WordPress integrated forum out there to handle heavy traffic sites. Thank you!

Been using Simple Press forum software for 10 years now – since Sep 2009.
It’s simply the most reliable and best supported of all our plugins and users love it. It can be configured pretty thoroughly.
Most important of all, support is just fantastic. Rapid responses and quick advice or even fixes when required. On one occasion, the main tech guy actually went into my site to diagnose a specific problem. That was over 3 years ago and I have not had to engage support since then.
Updates come out a few times a year – not too often to be a nuisance – but essentially the system has settled down and common teething troubles have mostly all been knocked on the head. It’s a mature piece of software.
I would not hesitate to recommend it to any WP user and it’s well worth the modest cost for something so solid and worthwhile.
The negative comments below just don’t make any sense to me.

I had been maintaining a Mingle Forum on my WP site for 6 years and neglected to make any changes after the developer stopped providing updates to his plugin. I belatedly decided to take the plunge to migrate my forum content to another developer. I first tried bbPress and their converter did a poor job of converting my archived data. Various forum posts were missing after conversion, so I did some further research and decided to install Simple:Press and its conversion tool. Voila! I’ve got a working forum with all my old data and have stopped getting error messages from SiteLock that the discontinued Mingle Forum 1.0.35 plugin suffers from privilege escalation CSRF.

Thanks to the Simple:Press team for continuing the plugin and releasing a 6.x version!
I maintain a site with this forum plugin for a client and we could successfully migrate over. We are glad for the updates and all worked out great.
One thing we think is now really good, is the child theme system for the forum themes. Finally we can make updates without hassle.
Keep up the good work and let future improvements come! ??

I’ve used Simple Press since 2008. Nobody wants to pay for anything, myself included. However, it’s a very good product and things have really changed in the last 10 years!
For one thing, many plugins cost money and/or require a subscription. Simple Press is a robust system that provides pretty much, every feature you might want for your forum.
Further, if there is something new you want, the new team is incredibly responsive. For example, I asked for a plugin that would allow me to insert ads to better monetize my forum. The team added this ability within a month. That’s impressive.
If you’ve been at this for any amount of time, you know how important it is, that plugins are maintained. The new owners are keeping up. The lack of gratitude with these low ratings is appalling.
I recall the months of angst, knowing the original plugin authors were going to retire. We were all going to be stuck with a forum that would have to be converted at some point and what? We’d have to pay for that, one way or the other. We are very lucky the buyer came in to save.
I would hate to see the fee go any higher but I do think the forum and the plugins are worth $99 a year. There are rarely any problems and anything that does come up is quickly resolved in a professional manner.

I have used the Simple-Press plugin as an essential part of my business for about 9 years now. During this entire time it has been free. Okay, I paid a few dollars for extra support once in a while, and I purchased a theme and a few plugins over the years. No big deal.
Now with the latest upgrade I still have everything I had before the upgrade. There is nothing I have to buy extra, and my entire forum setup is still free, unless I want additional features or personalized support.
I don’t understand what a previous commenter has been complaining about. Supposedly it’s now a ‘commercial product’. The basic plugin is still free, and obviously the people who made the plugin have to make money somewhere, otherwise why would they do all this work.
I have always been very happy with Simple-Press, and still am. Version 6 is even better now, and I like the fact that it is now on www.remarpro.com (which it was not before).
The support people have always been very knowledgeable and helpful, and I would definitely recommend this plugin for anyone who needs a good and reliable forum.

We love SimplePress as its style hearkens back to what we think were better times on the internet. Easy to setup with powerful features in the basic core!

How to kill a product? Buy a good working product or service and try to squeeze it completely dry by asking money for every little piece. That’s what happened to Simple Press. Even all the addons and themes I bought before won’t work on the new update. You should stay away from this company. They are here only for your money.

SP is a RIP OFF!
First I paid for products. Then I paid for support only.
I wasted AT LEAST 20 hours trouble shooting a SP theme. It turned out that it was NOT my other plugins, my web host, my computer or my stupidity.
That nobody else caught this SERIOUS bug (group links not working) tells you how few people actually use SP.
I was THRILLED when I finally got some code to add and it actually fixed the group links.
A few months later, after a plug in update, there was the bug again!
They didn’t even bother to fix it for everybody and released an update WITH THE BUG!
But it gets even better!
When I tried to get back to the solution, I had to ONCE AGAIN PAY to access the support forum!!!!!!!
When I posted that I didn’t appreciate a business model that DELIBERATELY puts out KNOWN bugs so that users have to PAY for support AGAIN, they banned me from the SP forum!
Yup, you read that right.
I paid TWICE for them to fix the bug!
Simple Press? WHY would ANYONE use it?
And WHY did the mods here delete my review?

All functionality is paid and very expensive. The free version is very simple. The best times of this forum are long gone.

Your old SP themes and SP plugins won’t work with version 6 and you have to buy them. Yes, you have pay even for basic SP themes. So stay with SP 5.7 and DO NOT UPGRADE to version 6!
