I’ve been using this for about six months now and it works a treat. I get so many spam comments and this filters them all off into the spam folder. I could go down the route of installing some form of verification code, but I don’t want to put an extra barrier in the way for genuine comments, so this is the perfect compromise.

As my anime blog began to grow in popularity, I discovered that the amount of spam increased as well. While Akismet flagged everything properly, and using Jetpack’s “Jetpack Comments” prevented normal comment spam, trackback spam was still a huge problem. I didn’t want to turn off trackback/pingback options due to the SEO boost legitimate trackback provides, so I needed a solution to stop the ever increasing mounds of trackback spam.
Enter Topsy Blocker.
Setup is quite easy (only a few options to select), and for my initial test, I had it simply flag the trackback spam that Akismet was already marking as spam. Seeing that this worked as advertised, I changed the option of Topsy Blocker to discard spam trackback so that it doesn’t even load into the database. As a result, I now have ZERO spam of any kind showing up in the database, and legitimate comments and trackback are showing up as expected thus far.
Seriously, I can’t thanks the developer of this plugin enough. While it was certainly easy enough to have myself or my staff press “empty spam” every day, we love it that we don’t even have to do this. Plus, that’s less load on my database with trackback spam no longer being saved.
