Hi,
I am completely new to this – learning by doing – but just can’t get the
search engine to display.
I’ve installed and activated search-engine and clicked my way through indexing.
Documentation says: “search_engine_form() to display the Search Engine form anywhere on your site” – but how do I actually do this?
Essentially can someone give me a quick example of how to call up search_engine_form() in a wordpress page in text mode?
Thank you ever so much – I will repay you one day by troubleshooting your R-scripts!

]]>Hi, Scott
There was a similar question about blacklisted items, but did not really meet my needs.
So I have a PODS driven product catalogue under url https://www.mysite.com/products
Is it possible to configure Search Engine to index only https://www.mysite.com/products/* – all links that are under /products?
All the products are on detail pages like https://www.mysite.com/products/product1, so these I want to index and show in search results.
Thank you.
bp 1.5.5 wp 3.2.2
Question when do you think you will have a pro version that allows people to add a url other than domains/subdomains.
I am very interested in getting a version that will allow people to add their link and the module will build a index of their pages.
Also It should query the main index page once a month to make sure the links are still active and if not delete them.
I would be willing to pay you for this as a upgrade to your plugin if you have this available.
Thanks Sal

]]>Hi, I have a problem- I got a fatal error as a result of a search. In fact it is a link, which leads to correct search result.
Fatal error: Call to undefined function mb_internal_encoding() in /prusakowski/web/cantowp/wp-content/plugins/search-engine/classes/Search.class.php on line 400
my site is (under constrution)
What could be the cause? I do not know php.
Basically, I’m trying to exclude all attachment posts from being indexed, as well as any pages that could be accessed via admin login. I’ve entered ‘attachment’ in the blacklisted keywords field, but attachments are still being indexed and showing up in search results. Any ideas where I’m going wrong here?
]]>Hi Scott –
The search engine plugin seems to be showing draft content in the search results as well as items moved to the Trash, but clicking on the links leads to 404s (better than showing the content, of course).
What am I doing wrong?

]]>I have a robots text file https://apexprd.org/robots.txt and meta nofollow and noindex on pages that are bing indexed.
my _searchengine_template table has disable_robots = 0. Is that correct? Shouldn’t it be skipping those pages with noindex?

]]>I am stuck and need help. We recently redesigned and launched our web site:
https://www.bowerwebsolutions.com
The site consists of static .php pages which were hand coded excepted for the Blog section which is powered by WordPress 3.2.1. For about 3 months prior to the full launch of the new site, we had our blog running with your Search-Engine (latest version) running and everything was fine.
When it came time to launch the full site to public, we reset the Search Engine settings (Dashboard ->Search Engine-> Settings) and reindexed the entire site (our hand code pages and the WP pages)
It appears that the plugin is finding and indexing all the pages, yet when I search for a term with a static .php page that is one or two directory levels down, it does not return any results. When I search Google for the specific url in question, Google has already reindexed it so I dont think it is being blocked by any robot.txt / NOINDEx commands.
Any ideas?
]]>Hiya,
This plugin is working great so far. The only request is to be able to use wildcards on the blacklist items. It’s indexing every one of my attachments, and more often than not, delivering them above more relevant search results. I’d love to be able to blacklist everything with *attachment_id* in the URL. Any ideas?
Thanks so much for all your great work.

]]>I finally managed to index my site, but I’m a little stuck here…
I’m not an expert so here goes.
Indexed the site, and I would like to have the search option in a seperate page. The website I installed wordpress on is a mix of good ol’ fashioned php/html, with a few blogs integrated in the site.
I understood that the search function can do both the blogs and the rest of the site.
But how do I include it on a search page ?
I would like to make it a bit like the contact page on my website, style wise.
oh, the search function is on a seperate wordpress installation btw, just in case I would need to make it appear as a blog… a bit clueless on this one !

]]>Is there any way for this plugin to be able to search other websites we specify. It seems, depending on what’s in the “Default Site for Search” box, then that’s what the search engine will search. We have other websites that we would like the search engine to search, and I’ve not been able to figure out how to allow the plugin to do this. We’ve specified the other websites in the Index Template’s section.
For example, this is what’s going on.
In the Index Templates section, we have 5 websites we would like the search engine to search:
1. https://www.websiteA.com
2. https://www.websiteB.com
3. https://www.websiteC.com
4. https://www.websiteD.com
5. https://www.websiteE.com
We made sure in the ‘Whitelisted URLs’ section that the 5 websites were there, all separated by commas.
In the ‘Default Site for Search’ section, we have ‘https://www.websiteB.com’ selected.
When we try to do a search, it only brings back results from https://www.websiteB.com only and not the other websites.
Also, I notice when I put anything in the ‘Whitelisted URLs’ section and click ‘Index my site,’ if I go back to the Wizard again, then all of the URLs I put in the box are gone…

]]>Hello, and thanks for this plugin.
1. Is it possible to filter the text to be searched to exclude punctuation and non-alphanumeric characters? I have keywords such as ‘again’, ‘again,’, ‘again.’, ‘again?’, even ‘”again”‘ (with double quotes), and so on.
2. How can I deal with singular/plural issues, and have just one word for both?
3. How can I deal with word ending variations and have one word for them all? I have keywords like ‘allege’, ‘alleged’, ‘alleging’, ‘allegedly’, ‘alleges’. I would like to see all of these as one root word, or is that not a good idea?
4. How do I deal with something like this: ‘alltitle=medicare%20a%20right%20for%20us%20allbodytext=yes’…? %20 is a space and other characters are so rendered.
My site features chosen syndicated stories of interest to seniors and boomers, so we can get anything from the wires.
]]>I really like how this plug in is working but I have 2 issues.
1) Is there anyway to make the search less broad? For example, a search for “rice” also returns results for “price”
2) I am trying to exclude a block of text from my results. I added class”noindex” to it but it still shows up in the description under the result. Does the pluging also use meta tag description for this? I just want to the result description to be the content of the page.
Thanks.
]]>The Search Engine plugin is fantastic in every way except one: when I use the shortcode in a page, it doesn’t matter whereabouts in the page the shortcode is, the search field always appears at the top of the resulting page. This means that I can’t write an introduction (unless I hard-code it into the template, which I’m reluctant to do), because the intro text will always appear underneath the search field and the search results.
So if I edit my page as follows:
Looking for something specific? Try the search:
[search_engine sites=”1″]
the output ends up as:
[ search box ] [search button]
Result 1
Result 2
Result 3
etc.Looking for something specific? Try the search:
How can I get the search box and results to appear where I put them using the shortcode?
]]>Loving this plugin!
I have a couple issues and I’m so not php savvy, so before I attempt to plunder my way though I’m hoping someone knows the answers to these issues:
1. The search results template is bumping my sidebar down. I’m pretty css fluent but I can’t find anything there so I figured the issue is probably in the template itself. Anyone tackle this already or know the answer?
2. I managed to limit the results desc to the main content based on another post here, but it always shows text from the html itself instead of just reader-friendly text. For example, if someone searches for ‘border’ every entry with ‘border’ in the html also shows as a result. Obviously that’s not what the reader would want (or even understand). Anyway to fix this issue?
3. Search results are also picking up everything in the nav menu which really dilutes it. I’m using the thesis theme to build this site… any ideas how to remove the nav menu contents from the results since they’re repeated on every page?
Thanks in advance… I appreciate any help!
]]>Using the Search Engine Plugin (version 0.5.7.1) .
Great Plugin, perfect for capturing the entire site. The output really does need to be unbundled from the functionality.
But that’s not the issue.
If you are using the sandbox theme and have a body tag like this –
<body class="<?php sandbox_body_class() ?>">
The calling of the sandbox_body_class() function results in the function search_engine_content() being called and the output placed in the middle of the body tag.
Hence the results are displayed twice.
Anyone have a solution
]]>From the Easy Indexing Wizard page, select Advanced Options, then enter something for Blacklisted URLs. Since there is no “Save” option, we need to click “Index my Site”. That makes sense, as long as that button saves the specs before it re-indexes. If you go back to the Wizard page after (attempted) indexing, the spec is not there. Either it’s not saved, or it’s not displayed when the page is displayed.
This brings me to a question about at spec:
– I don’t want category index pages to be saved.
– I don’t want Page x of Y pages to themselves be indexed.
– I don’t want tag index pages to be indexed.
– I don’t want trackbacks indexed.
– I do want comments to be indexed, though I don’t want a blog entry and comment to redundantly show twice in search results.
This concept of index pages getting indexed is really annoying (but it’s understandable that the entire site is getting indexed so I’d like to work through this). I just want blog entries indexed.
I am trying to blacklist the URL text “category,page,tag,trackback”. I want to make sure that I don’t accidentally blacklist blog entries like:
turn-the-page.html
tagyourit.html
created-new-category2.html
i-hate-trackback-spam.html
I also don’t want hits duplicated, where “/blog/foo.html” is the same as “https://Nebula-RnD.com/blog/?p=400”. So can I blacklist that as “category,?p=” … or how else?
Do I need to revise the blacklist text as “/category,/page,/tag” etc?
I think my questions come down to a fundamental lack of understanding about exactly what gets indexed and how. I think more documentation on the nuances of what’s expected will go a long way to eliminate problems where we don’t know what to expect and therefore don’t know how to tweak the Wizard and other config pages.
Thanks Scott!!!!
]]>The search-engine v0.5.7.1 plugin of course displays the title of each blog entry along with a summary of the content. If the index only contains one blog, it’s redundant and annoying to see the blog name in every title. For example:
My trip by TravlerBlog
Fun in a new town by TravlerBlog
Packing tips by TravlerBlog
To eliminate the ” by TravlerBlog” text (made up name for this example), I replaced line 1235 of search-engine.php with the following (line split for readability but this is all one line):
<h3 class="search_engine_Title">
<a href="<?php echo $result->url; ?>">
<?php echo $search->search_do_excerpt(
str_replace(' by TravlerBlog', '',$result->title)
,68,false);
?>
</a>
</h3>
The ‘str_replace()’ part replaces the original full $result->title.
If there is a better way to do this, please post here. Thanks!

]]>Hi Scott –
Looking good with one exception, which I suspect may be a bug. I perform a search, then try to search from the field above the search results and it takes me to my homepage. The URL string shows a ?q=<search term> instead of a ?s=<search term>.
You can see it here:
https://www.instituteofplay.org/search-test/
(try searching for ‘salen’ )
Eventually I’ll drop the search box into a toolbar at the top of all pages, so a workaround might be to hide the in-page search box.
Thoughts?
Thanks!
Bob
ps. this site is making heavy use of PODS cms, btw.
