I used Child Theme Configurator while having Recent Post With Excerpts intalled, and it helpfully pointed out the following typo on line 89 of recent-with-excerpts-widgets.php:

$q = apply_filters('recent_posts_with_excerpts_query', $q, $intance);

It was easy enough for me to add the missing “s” to “instance”.

The post excerpts show up and the full post is in the database, but when I click on Read More link it takes me to a blank white page on all posts. If I hover over the Read More link to see the url it looks correct but will not display the full post. Any idea how to fix? All other site links work fine. I’ve resaved permalinks many times and changed to default permalinks back to Date Month several times but still did not fix it. I also reinstalled wordpress 4.5.2 twice and changed to a new 4.5.2 compatible theme. Nothing will fix it that I can think of. Any suggestions?

Hi, I was searching for solutions to problems unrelated to Recent Posts with Excerpt plugin, which led me to looking at source code of pages. I found that there was un-closed tags:

Coming from line 113 of the PHP file. Problem is, I can’t see what’s wrong with it there, but something seems to be… browser catches it as un-closed tags. At least that’s how it shows up in my page:

Support for PHP 4 style constructors is being removed in the upcoming PHP 7 release. It looks like this plugin still uses them in this file: recent-with-excerpts-widgets.php:271

As of WordPress 4.3 this triggers a deprecation notice. It’s fairly straightforward to fix. Just rename your constructor function __construct() and reference the main WP_Widget constructor with parent::__construct().

Hi am very happy with the plugin ‘Recent posts with excerpts’, but there are some issues. First of all I don’t want to see the bullet points before the titles and I want to align the titles to the left. Also I don’t like the titles to be underlined. I use text color black, but the excerpts become grey. How can I make them black also? Before the excerpts a vertical line appears. How can I remove that and let the text align to the left? The titles of posts without excerpts have no space between. Is it possible to add some space? Finally it would be nice if it is possible to change the layout of ‘read more’. I hope this is possible, because the plugin almost exactly answers my needs. Unfortunately I am not a programmer. I use Headway Themes to build my own themes, but I can’t achieve with it what I want to change in the blocks created with Recent posts with excerpts. Thanks a lot!

I would like to list all of my posts. I’m wondering how I can list the most recent 15 posts with a link a the bottom to view the next 15 posts so that I don’t have to list over 100 posts on a single page.

Translation files are not loaded.
I found out that this is caused by two problems.

1. The load_plugin_textdomain( 'recent_posts_with_excerpts', ... should be load_plugin_textdomain( '<strong>recent-posts-with-excerpts</strong>', ...
And plugin_dir_path(__FILE__) should be plugin_basename(__FILE__) although the original is working in my case.

2. All like: php _e('Title:', 'recent_posts_with_excerpts') should point to the correct $domain and replaced by php _e('Title:', '<strong>recent-posts-with-excerpts</strong>')

In .pot is missing: Ignore sticky posts?

(With a ‘find and replace’ the names of css are changed, so child styles should be changed also then. The ‘-‘ in the function name at the end is not allowed, so this should not be altered.)

Hi,

Two days ago I updated this widget to 2.5.4 and it changed the appearance (font style and link style) of the posts that were added by an older version (though I forget the widget version last used). WP version 3.9.3.

I played around with the stylesheet of the child theme and nothing helped. Though I’ve made other kinds of CSS and code adjustments, I’m no programmer so maybe a few more detailed instructions would help (and I’ve used FF’s Inspect Element). Or maybe I can figure out the issue by comparing this version to an older one…do you have an older one?

I really like your plug-in, I just need some help with a couple different items as listed below. I’ve gone through the plug-in to see if I can make the changes and couldn’t figure out, so I thought I would ask you. Here’s what I need your help with:

1. How do I remove the underlines after each post?

2. Need to unbolt the post title, as well as give it a different style, color

3. When I load it on the page it puts the post content in italics, how do I remove that?

4. Lastly, it indents on the page. Is there a way for me to just have the left justified?

When using an actual excerpt all is well. But when I leave the excerpt blanc and use the <!–more–> psuedo tag the plugin will just fill up onto x-amount of text before showing the a.excerpt-read-more

It should work with similarly with the <!–more–> right?

If you choose to display the widget title, it results in invalid html. The following line needs to be changed in recent-with-excerpts-widgets.php from

$after_title .= '</a>';
to
$after_title = '</a>'.$after_title;

Nifty plugin… Would you also know of a way to filter share buttons from post excerpts?

My buttons are created by the Simple Share Button Adder plugin. I’m pleased how the buttons appear on my post pages and page pages, but I do not want them appearing in the post excerpts which i’m displaying across my site in custom sidebars.

This is not endemic to any particular share button plugin – I have noticed people reporting this problem with various plugins… e.g., JetPack, Share This and Simple Share. So it seems to me it’s a larger WordPress issue… and so i tried your plugin, hoping it would provide a feature to control the display of buttons in post excerpts – alas, it doesn’t seem to at this time.

I have tried this solution that i see that you suggested to someone else:
remove_filter( 'the_excerpt', 'sharing_display', 19 );
But this did not remove the buttons from my post excerpts.

I will be so happy if you can offer a solution.

I’ve been using the fix posted by JGeo a year ago for excluding a category, and then re-implementing that fix with each update of the plugin. Unfortunately, I can no longer get that fix to work and I’m not sure how to get the results I need. It is imperative for our site that I be able to exclude 1 category from the recent posts.

We love this plugin and want to keep using it. Would you please add the ability to exclude 1 or more categories to the plugin via a dropdown in the widget, and/or post a code snippet here so I can make the fix myself in the meantime? I’d gladly make a donation to not have to rework the plugin code each time. ??

I’m using Jetpack social buttons at the end of posts which I want, but these feature on and dominate the excerpt posts – through this plugin – on my front page.

Secondly, I had some problems getting the post-date into the <h3>-tag and I found a solution:

change this code on line 91:

if (!empty($date))
echo '<h3 class="date">'.the_time($date).'</h3>';

to:

if (!empty($date))
echo '<h3 class="date">'.get_the_time($date, $post).'</h3>';

I’m trying to apply the recent-posts-with-excerpts plugin inside the Vulcan theme. Where the widget is placed I only have room for one post excerpt. I’d like the widget to display the excerpt from a random post within the selected category each time a page loads.

Can you guide me as to where and how to make this change?

The ul and li elements both have a blank class attribute ‘class=””‘.

The only element with a class is the date: <h3 class=”date”>

Thankfully my use case is pretty simple so I can style it through descendant selectors. If I had multiple widgets in the same widget area then things would get complicated.

Please just add a ‘recent-posts’ class to the ul!
