A shelter website I help with is getting the following error, where their list of shelter pets is usually displayed:
“Could not get access token from Petfinder: cURL error 28: Operation timed out after 120001 milliseconds with 0 bytes received
Not able to create a Petfinder V2 access token. Please make sure your API Key and Secret are set correctly on the plugin’s settings page.”
A google search showed me tons of other shelter websites with the same error; I’ve tried replacing the API key + secret to no avail. Anyone have any ideas?
]]>Recently our photos are taking up the entire available width of the display (not including the sidebar.) You have to scroll a long way to get to the pet description. Not sure if something happened with Petfinder? I worry that potential adopters will give up since they have to scroll so much to get to the written description. Thanks!
]]>Website has been using this wonderful plugin for a few years and now receiving {“type”:”https:\/\/httpstatus.es\/429″,”status”:429,”title”:”Rate Limit Exceeded”,”detail”:”Limit Exceeded”} message when this plugin is enabled. Help please.
]]>Just want to know if this plugin is still being supported/developed. I am considering it for a client/project and don’t want to be stuck with an abandoned plugin in a few months.
]]>The plugin dumps all available images into the post – can we limit to just the first image? Code solutions OK.
]]>Hi, I’m looking for a way to only get based on the color
is that parameter available in this plugin?
Thanks
]]>Hi, I’m having an issue with CSS classes. I used to have classes based off of more features on the animal.
Example: class=”cat adult male large”
https://imgur.com/XYz3nCr
I’m working on a rebuild for a site and it’s displaying really simplified classes. For example, on a listing of a cat the class is “dog cat”
I’ve copied all of the code and stylings from my old site, but i cannot figure out where these simplified classes are coming from. Is is possible to get the old classes back? I noticed even in the demo from the plugin page, the class is “dog dog”

]]>Hi,
I maintain the website for a local rabbit rescue shelter and your plugin has been lovingly used by us for quite some time; thank you so much for making it so easy to integrate the Petfinder listings within our website!
That being said, did something with the plugin recently change? Earlier today the “Google Search Console” tool alerted me that there was malware on our site, but it specifically references the “/wp-content/plugins/petfinder-listings/” directory. And the Google alert says it will flag the site as hosting “harmful content” until it’s resolved.
Is anyone else reporting this? I’m hoping it is some mistake but I don’t know what action to take? It’s definitely not spam/phishing, since I logged-into the Google Search Console directly and the malware alert/warning is there. And we don’t use any other WordPress plugins on our shelter site so I don’t think that’s the issue.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
]]>Hello, I recently updated this plugin to v1.1 and now our filtered adoption pages (Dogs, Cats, etc) are showing all pets rather than only the specified animal. We haven’t changed the shortcodes or any other page content, just updated the plugin. The shortcodes in question take the form [shelter_list animal="dog"]
. I’ve tried resaving the pages to no avail. We’re using the classic editor and not shortcode blocks, for what it’s worth.
Any advice? We’re on WP 6.0.2 and all our plugins are up to date.
]]>I installed an SSL certificate, and petfinder listings started to display “No pets available at this time.” I went to my petfinder API account and updated the URL there to https but it still didn’t work. So then I switched everything back to http and now it still isn’t working. Thanks for any suggestions.
]]>This is a development domain for a humane society in Florida. Petfinder fixed my API key to show full descriptions because we are a shelter, using Petfinder listings on our website.
I want to add something (a text link) to the bottom of every listing. I added the function snippet from the documentation to my functions.php file and nothing happens:
function replace_pet_description( $description ) {
return $description . ” Add me to end of all pets’ descriptions”;
}
add_filter( ‘petf_replace_description’, ‘replace_pet_description’ );
I cleared my browser cache. Tried it in functions.php in my theme file and also in my child theme; neither worked.
Can you steer me toward a fix?
Many thanks.
]]>Instead of using the Petango plugin for PetPoint, we have decided to use your plugin for our Shelter. On our existing custom site, the customization pulls in pets for the locations of the pet for the adoption shows each week. Is there anything switch that can be added for the PetFinder listings to show the same?
]]>We are experiencing that when the website is loaded on a phone, the available dog listings are not updated with any changes from petfinder. There is an update lag of some wort. However, when the site is loaded from a computer or typical desktop browser, the listings are updated. Any help with this??? Why are they different?
]]>Trying to move the name and “more” below the pic, plus add Adult or Puppy and Male/Female. The I want to link to separate page for that pet – not all available pets. Are these thing doable? Thank you
]]>Hello,
We are getting a “No pets available at this time” message on our pages. We updated the plug-in a few months ago and have tried various options of the shortcode, ruled out conflicting plug-ins, confirmed with PF the API key is working and have tested with default themes like twentytwenty. Nothing seems to work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
]]>Hello there! I am trying to get our adoption pages linked with our Petfinder account, but it is telling me that Petfinder is down. However, there is no error code returned that I can see.
I already contacted Petfinder and they’ve told me that their service is working fine and that I needed to contact the Plugin developer.
Thanks in advance!
]]>I am redeveloping our local shelters website (not available for review as it is being locally developed). I need featured pets on our home page, however I am not sure how to get them there with PetFinder. Our pets start out on PetPoint and are pushed to PetFinder. Thank you
]]>Hello, I wanted to let you know that the way you’re making the API call for Small & Furry pets doesn’t seem to work — Petfinder returns no results for a query string that includes “&type=Small & Furry”.
I found that calling urlencode() on the $animal variable before appending it to the query string does work. This is in the petf_shelter_list() function. My query string ends up including “&type=small+%26+furry” and I get the results I expect.
I expect this fix would also work for the “Fins & Other” animal type, but our shelter doesn’t have any of those to test with.
Thanks for this great plugin! It’s very helpful for the small shelter I volunteer with.
]]>I help with two sites using the Petfinder plugin. This morning both offered this error instead of the list of adoptable pets:
Petfinder is down at the moment. Please check back shortly.
Error Code returned:
No error code given. A couple of hours later one site was fine but https://marilynsvoice.org/petfinder/ is still showing the error. I’ve tried everything including checking API keys and re-adding them, checking to see if another plugin is causing this (no). We are running WordPress 5.5 and haven’t updated it yet as too many people are having issues with dropdowns in their Navigation Menu when they update to 5.5, however, our other site is working fine with 5.5.(https://www.stayawhilecatshelter.org/adoptable-cats/).
Should I contact Petfinder or do you have any suggestions? Thank you!
]]>PetFinder recently deactivated their v1 API and my site quit working. Does this plugin support their v2 API? I volunteer for an animal shelter and am trying to get this rectified quickly. Thanks
]]>I was alerted that the website was not showing adoptable animals. Website was showing alot of errors instead of animals and I thought, well finally I have to convert to API 2.0, so I did.
Now it says “no pets available at this time”. I entered the API 2.0 key and secret a second time, same result. I turned on debug in the plugin and got this error message:
array(4) { [“type”]=> string(25) “https://httpstatus.es/500” [“status”]=> int(500) [“title”]=> string(5) “error” [“detail”]=> string(5) “error” }
Would appreciate any help figuring this out!
]]>I am unable to activate the plugin, I’m getting the following error:
/home/content/46/11619746/html/wp-content/plugins/petfinder-listings/admin-notices-master/src/Dismiss.php on line 61
In recent months we are intermittently getting “No pets available at this time” displayed in place of our listings on the website. I can’t find any errors in the site logs or anything else wrong. It seems to work fine in the mornings and then at some point in the day it fails…until the next morning. This behavior made me think we were exceeding our daily API request limits, but Petfinder support insists this isn’t the case. I’m not sure how they count requests, but we get about 300 to 400 page views per day on the pet listings pages.
I’m aware of the 100 pet limit that causes this to happen and are limiting ours to 99 with the short code.
I can see where the line “No pets available at this time” appears in the plugin code, but figuring out what circumstances trigger it is above my pay grade. At this point I’ve edited the code and replaced this line with “See our animals on Petfinder.com” until we figure this out.
Thanks!
]]>I am trying to see all the various ways that i can reformat the data that is in the plugin, is there a way to do that?
thanks in advance!

]]>I just installed the plugin, it works great using [shelter_list]
Our shelter takes care of many Adult cats and Cats with Special Needs
I was wondering if there’s a way to create a Shortcode to display ONLY adults
and also another Shortcode to display ONLY Special Needs
Thank you very much for your help
]]>Is there a way to show Breed/Age/Gender/Size in this order or one after the other before behavior/vetting parameters and the pet description?
Thank you in advance!
]]>I love this API, thanks for maintaining it! I’m a novice at this but now that I’m on the new API 2.0, I’m having an issue with how the text aligns from the pet description. The description text wraps in a skinny column to the far right of the main picture and thumbnails. It only happens in the desktop view, tablet and phone views look fine, the text shows below the pictures in those devices. Is this due to the theme I’m using? Can you suggest a way to fix it? Maybe a width command or css_class?
]]>I’m using the shortcodes
[shelter_list] and
[shelter_list shelter_id=”CO415″ status=”X”]
And it’s returning the adoptable pets twice instead of the adoptable AND adopted. Any ideas?
Thanks!
]]>Hi, We have been using the petfinder plugin for quite a while and it has been of great benefit. We have received a couple of emails from Petfinder that say they have updated the API to V 2.0 and wanted to ask if Petfinder Listings will support this new API????
Many Thanks, the plugin has helped us so much over the years. See below:
“Thank you for being a valued user of Petfinder’s API. We are excited to announce that a new version of the API, version 2.0, is now available at https://www.petfinder.com/developers/
You will need to register for a new API key and update existing applications to use version 2.0.
Beginning 1/20?/2020, Petfinder will no longer support earlier versions of the API. We ask that you update all of your development projects to the new version well in advance to avoid any problems for your users.
Please refer to our API documentation at https://www.petfinder.com/developers/v2/docs/ for more information. Should you need assistance, please contact [email protected] with any questions.”
