The oik-nivo-slider plugin provides an advanced [nivo] shortcode.
In its simplest form it will display the images attached to a post or page.
But there are many advanced scenarios which allow you to make a slideshow out of just about any content, so long as there are attached images.
Much of the advanced capability is provided by the oik base plugin.
The previous low ratings were applicable when the oik base plugin consisted of many plugins. This is no longer the case. Those plugins were extracted and made into standalone plugins a long time ago.
I’ve only rated the slider as a 4 since it’s not the best on small screen smart phones and tablets and some of the transitions don’t appear to work. That’s a limitation of the jQuery.

Easy to implement and enough options to go trough.
4 stars for now because it doesn’t support jquery 2.0.0 atm and it installs a lot of other oik plugins. (though not al have to be activated)

This might be a create plugin… but when it installs 8-10 additional things, it immediately generated a panic… “OMG, what have I done to my site!”
No worries, it seems to uninstall OK, and can be deleted (which is exactly what I did).

Installs a lot of other oik plugins just to get a simple tiny slideshow running.
too much bloat for my personal use.
Only useful if you’re already using a bunch of oik plugins

I searched for a simple-slider plugin. This one said “you need to install the oik base plugin”.
But the base plugin is not a simple tiny background-plugin (the slider itself is some tiny plugin, with not much settings). The base plugin installed NINE other plugins.
So you got :
If you already use oik-stuff and don’t need much settings, this is propably the slideshow for you.
