Is there a way, even via PHP, to apply a different sorting logic to the displayed links?

I’ve been using Media Tags and Media Widgets plug-ins forever. I am using the theme: Writr. Because my site is all about recipes I’ve included over 70 recipe PDFs, in 11 different categories (which I tagged using Media Tags). In the sidebar I’ve put in 11 Media widgets, under which I’d like to list the recipes with the corresponding tags. Somehow some tags don’t work, others do. I have no clue what is wrong. Any tips?
