There are other ones which do the same job but this is the only one i use because Pippin is doing a great job and makes sure that this plugin will also be running in years from now on.

Once the author got me clear on where the plugin appears when activated, I was able to install and run it on multiple 4.2.4 sites with no problems.

Simple, but great plugin to use when testing update functionality for plugins.
Also, because I had to test for themes too, I found that by adding this simple line in the pw_force_updates_check() function in the plugin I could also force a theme update check:
set_site_transient( 'update_themes', null );
