This is a one-file-plugin that creates a widget that shows up to refine the results on an archive or search results page (see lines 29-31 of the php file).
It uses the wordpress core functions to get and display the taxonomy terms and counts and filter the results. The logic is plain to see so should not be hard to customize.

This widget works well, with no mess, no fuss install – activate – add to a widget area and done. (I’m using WordPress 3.5.1 and plugin version 1.5). By displaying the various taxonomies of your site together with a count, your giving visitors some idea of the scope and depth of your content. Good information design I say, especially for a larger site.
