Couldn’t do enough with the demo version as categories didn’t do anything.
Surprisingly, the full version also doesn’t do anything with categories.
Shortcodes are not documented.
No online examples to see different ways of configuring the look.
No way to ask for a refund without sending a tech support email….which tells you that asking for tech support means you can’t give a refund! Pretty cute.
Paid version seems less useful than free versions of other products

I bought the plugin 2 years ago and it worked fine. This time I baught it and it threw a fatal error. I contacted the customer support by filling out a detailled form, everything that was needed to check the system as well as created a user account for them to troubleshoot.
The contact form states that if you miss out a field they would charge you. The paypal t&cs of them states if you want a refund they going to invoice you (more than the plugin is worth).
After writing the fourth email by requesting a refund since plugin doesnt work as well as there was no answer to my previous emails, the developer got back to me in a nearly harassing way, telling me they closed the ticket. I never got any notification or clarification.
Use the plugin in the lite version, as long as it doesn’t break your site. But be careful when thinking of purchasing the plugin.

Das Encyclopedia Plugin nutzen wir seit über 10 Jahren in der Pro Version. In dieser Zeit hat sich bei WordPress extrem viel getan, dieses Plugin ist ein m?chtiges Werkzeug und der Entwickler Dennis Hoppe leistet hier wirklich einen erstklassigen Support. WordPress Plugins sind leider ein Stück Software das nicht so sauber gekapselt ist wie andere Konzepte, so dass Seiteneffekte leider nicht ausgeschlossen sind. Unsere Erfahrung ist, dass wenn bei diesem Plugin mal ein Fehler auftritt, der Entwickler diesen nicht nur umgehend beseitigt, sondern auch pers?nlich zeitnah reagiert.

Ich finde das Euren langj?hrigen Alt-Kunden gegenüber — die auch durch ihre kostenlose Nutzung für Eure Entwicklung vorteilhaft (gewesen) sein dürften — extrem unfair.

Zus?tzlich war auf unserer Webseite eine Zeit lang keine ?nderung von Posts und Pages m?glich. Fehlermeldung beim Versuch ?nderungen zu speichern muss in etwa gewesen sein: “Aktualisierung fehlgeschlagen. Die Antwort ist keine gültige JSON-Antwort.” (nach Deaktivierung des Plugins Encyclopedia light war der Fehler sofort verschwunden, bei erneuter Aktivierung ist er jetzt verschwunden)

Als Zugabe-Bonus gab es dann eine endlose Liste ungültiger interner Links, da die Einstellungen “übersichtsseiten-URL-Slug” und “Element URL-Slug” auf den Standardwert “enzyklopaedie” zurückgesetzt wurde, der jetzt in der Light-Version NICHT MEHR ZU ?NDERN IST! ??????

It’s basically a paid only version. It’s limited to 12 entries and this make the plugin not usable. It’s just an advertising. Additionally paid version costs 49 euro that makes one of the most expensive one. Save time, don’t donwload.

When I originally posted this review I said . . .
This plugin does exactly what I need it to do . . . exactly! The only part that is frustrating is the lack of documentation/examples. Yes, I want to be lead by the hand, so sue me. Love the plugin, hate the documentation.
Now that I’ve paid for the pro version I’m updating my review to a two star rating. I think reviews that say “it sucks” or “it’s bad” aren’t of much use so I’m taking the time to tell you why it’s not worth five stars.
The logical approach to a lexicon/encyclopedia app/plugin is to display a prefix filter and restrict the index of terms to the selected prefix. This plugin does not do that. Plugin users have the choice of displaying all terms in the index or arbitrarily choosing the number of terms displayed. If the list of terms is restricted, the terms displayed are not going to start with whatever was chosen in the prefix filter. Yup, if you choose “K” in the prefix filter, the index is still going to show “A” items. Charming. The index will always show, starting at “A”, either the full index (in my case 1987 items) or it will show, again starting at “A”, the number of items chosen in the widget. Yup, it’s really that bad. If you choose this plugin, know that you will have to wait seconds to minutes to have the next feature of the plugin available for use or you will get a 404 error.
Excerpts shown in the archive page are going to be full length. You will need an additional plugin (Advanced Excerpt) to trim the excerpt length to something reasonable. If your terms run to pages of information, without an additional plugin to manage excerpt length the entire definition of the term will be displayed. Again, charming (not).
If you’ve read any other less than five star reviews you’ll quickly realize the documentation sucks. Truly. It’s woefully inadequate and misses the total concept of “how to”.
And finally, the plugin is easily overwhelmed/disabled by themes. Yup, it doesn’t work with all themes. If you’re stuck test driving this sucker and need a theme that will work, Bootstrap Basic4 works. You can add to the theme’s layout by using the Nimble plugin.
The premise of this theme is awesome. Unfortunately, it doesn’t live up to its promise. The logical function isn’t what’s happening here.

No E-Mail Support. Only support through tickets what is ok. BUT if you don′t type all informations into the ticket, INCLUDING YOUR ADMIN OR FTP ACCOUNT to your WP they will charge you 39€ per each missed information in the ticket! This means by fact NO SUPPORT! Even if you paid for the pro version. But to go there you have to agree that your storno right ist deleted. But you need support because the doku is so poor. And if you try to dispute at PayPal, the plugin-publisher will charge you 79€, “as agreed in terms and conditions”… So this is all legal but imagine the mindset of these guys…
Over all this are very bad people with a very bad mindset and I don′t want them to be part of my projects. I deleted the plugin. Have fun with my money!
UPDATE: You′d better try “CM Tooltip Glossary” from CreativeMinds. This is what I use now. Good people, good plugin!

Ich hatte heute Nachmittag eine wirklich unerfreuliche Korrespondenz mit Herrn Hoppe. Mein Webdesigner hat eine relativ unkomplizierte Anfrage gestellt, die in der (immerhin schnellen) Rückmeldung resultierte, dass man beim Ausfüllen der Supportanfrage nicht genau genug gewesen sei und deshalb vor überweisung einer Gebühr von 39 Euro kein weiterer Support mehr geleistet werden würde (die Rechnung wurde gleich mitgeliefert).
Um das Problem zu verdeutlichen:
Ein kostenloser Support über die ersten 12 Monate sind im Kauf des Plugins enthalten (was Herr Hoppe auch auf Nachfrage zugibt). Nur leider entscheidet Herr Hoppe, dass dies nur gilt, wenn man bei der initialen Anfrage alle Daten (inkl. Zugangsdaten zur eigenen Homepage (!!!), Screenshots, und diverse nur für Profis verst?ndliche Informationen) mitliefert.
Im Laufe des Emailwechsels stellte sich heraus, dass Herr Hoppe Supportanfragen nicht als Teil einer schon vorab bezahlten Leistung sieht, sondern als lohnendes Gesch?ftsmodell, mit dem nach dem Kauf weitere Einnahmen erzielt werden k?nnen.
Das erkl?rt auch die sehr basal ausgestattete Dokumentation seines Plugins, die es geradezu herausfordert den Support bemühen zu müssen.
Ich kann daher vom Kauf dieses Plugins nur abraten.
Ich werde es umgehend von meiner Website l?schen, da ich keine weitere Arbeit in dieses Tool investieren m?chte. Bei jeder weiteren Supportanfrage würde ich mich ja dumm und d?mlich zahlen.
Falls Sie einen professionellen Ton in den Emails erwarten – das ist vom “weltbesten Wrodpressprogrammierer” zuviel verlangt. Als Dienstleister stehen mir da alle Haare zu Berge.

Natürlich hat er das aufgrund der schlechten Referenz gemacht, denn die Lizenz war noch für 5 Monate gültig. Ich kann nicht nachvollziehen warum dieser unseri?se Anbieter nicht gesperrt wird.

I ran a quick proof of concept with the free version, everything seemed to work. I needed some of the pro features, so purchased the pro plan. I immediately had issues including cross linking definitions in the encyclopedia pages. To submit a support ticket, you have to agree to paying an additional fee if the developer isn’t happy with your ticket (even though you’re paying for pro support). I reluctantly submitted, and waited for any response. After a week with no reply, I figured it must not really be supported and reached out to the developer for a refund as the product didn’t work and the support I paid for wasn’t rendered. Funny enough, there was an immediate reply, stating that there was no way to refund and that my support tickets were now on hold. I submitted a complaint to PayPal, and the developer sent me a message “Your account was closed. Forever. Goodbye.”. After deleting my account, the developer is still refusing reimbursement. Luckily, I found CM Tool Tip. Works like a charm, with a much more friendly interface, more features, and they haven’t deleted my account, so I can still use it.

The plugin works when purchasing the paid version, but the developer is really strange. No changelog, no real documentation and you are forced to give him a lot of access for the most simple of support questions. If you don’t get every single detail right, you have to pay the developer on top of the yearly subscription. No idea why this is even allowed into the official plugin directory.

I installed the free version and bought the pro. I liked the free version, so needing the pro components, I went ahead and paid for the pro version. I installed it and when I tried to activate it, I got an error. I filled in the support form, sent a screenshot of the error, and was expecting assistance to get it working. Instead, I was offered the opportunity to pay the same again to get the problem fixed. On that basis, I asked for a refund and it was refused. I would not recommend this pro product or the supplier as I have essentially lost my money on paying for the pro version, unless I can work out the error myself. The supplier has been particularly rude in communications with me.
I suspect that the pro version is probably good, based on the free version but I, personally, would not trust buying anything from this supplier again. I feel like I have been defrauded out of my money,

When filling a support ticket (pro version), for missing or incorrect information, author will charge you 39$. One of the fields in support ticket is that you have to give WP Admin and FTP Access to author, if you don’t want to do that, better prepare to empty 39$ from your wallet. Either author is greedy AF, or doesn’t want people to bother him with support tickets.
