Per menu parent or item allow the admin to choosoe the color for that too or a selection of the two.
That you gotta select an option:
style menu background
style menu border
style both
when you select either of that option it displays the styling options.
For certain themes it might break the design to style each menu background. A border is more easy to adept in the design of a certain theme.
