After dealing with membership plugins etc had a whole mess of new roles.
Installed this plugin and rest the roles and boom right back to default five roles.
Amazing still works seeing it has not been updated in 6 years.

Simple and easy to use even so, that you’ve upgraded two years ago. Too bad the UI is not the default. Then it would be perfect.
