I run an image gallery website using FooGallery.

Whenever I load the admin gallery pages, I keep encountering this error.

This started happening after updating to WP 6.1

An error of type E_ERROR was caused in line 296 of the file /xxx/wp-content/plugins/auto-smart-thumbnails/inc/class-ast-face-detector.php. Error message: Maximum execution time of 60 seconds exceeded

Both knutsp and aumw-jay reported a crash with PHP8 and jilfransoi provided a work-around fix.

The problem was explained here: https://php.watch/versions/8.0/gdimage. It’s fixed per this explanation.

I can confirm that this plugin can cause a crashed site. Host updated to php 8.0 this morning, making the site break. Checked the error logs and saw this smoking gun:

I rolled the site back to php 7.3, and the site came back immediately, and no new errors showed up. Because this plugin hasn’t been updated recently, I’d only use it with caution.

Do you have plans to add a smartcrop option (like wp-smartcrop). I use wp-smartcrop a lot but it’s not being supported. Face detection sounds interesting, but not all images have faces. Having the option to choose between manual crop and face detection would be very useful.

I’m optimizing a website which theme (NewsMag) creates almost 24 thumbnails sizes ??

I already reduced the thumbs to 12 by checking out which sizes are really required, but now i’m looking for a solution that helps me to reduce more disk space.

I was thinking about deleting all sizes that I don’t use, but as is a website with almost 400k images (from thumbnails to original sizes) I’m afraid to run a bulk solution that leave some sizes out that I really need.

At the Media library, I’m seeing some media that’s really used on a post, but appears as “unlinked” (I don’t know how the authors uploaded them). My fear is to run this kind of plugin and that it erases this images, so, my question is… what is an “unused” thumbnail to this plugin?

I’m very interested in using your plugin as it is the solution I am after.

But before I install it I have the following questions.

1. For our theme our default size of our featured image is 685 x 336.

For this wide image on our home page on a mobile, we only what to show the middle section or ideally any part of the image which has a face on it.

For example (blue box area) 360 x 336

How can we do this with your plugin? Can we auto-create a thumbnail of this size but detecting one of those faces on the image?

2. If I have a number of custom images currently being created by my theme for sections of the site, how does your plugin override these?

How does it choose what is the best image size to use from those generated? Or does it generate the custom size later on demand?

3. How does your plugin work with CDN’s?

Did you finish the cleanup? If so reload your page that has faces wrongly cropped and see if it’s correct. The plugin will re-generate a new thumbnail on the fly.

Hello, sorry for the late reply. I made some tests on my test site. Some thumbnails are generated but not all and errors are showing. See the link I give.

Hello, your plugin seems very complete but when I tried it on one of my site, it deleted all thumbnails… and did not seem to recreate the missing one when browsing the site. Did I miss something??
