Hasn’t been updated in over a year and appears to have stopped working. Issues with CDN, Pollycast, transcribe and translate. It served well for a few years but now seems to be at End of Life. Probably time to write my own.

It used to work fine on older WordPress versions. Well, at least CDN or should I say Site Acceleration doesn’t work anymore. I’m unable to create new Cloudfront distribution with the plugin. Whenever I try to create new Cloudfront distribution I end up with: `Caught exception in method AmazonAI_Cloudformation::check_cf_creation in class AmazonAI_Cloudformation:
CloudFormation stack is in an unexpected state. CloudFront distribution state is and stack state is UPDATE_ROLLBACK_COMPLETE `
The only thing I can say, it’s trash. Full of bugs.

1) Changing individual voices (per post) reverts back to the very first voice selected. IE: If you select “UK Brian”, then wish to change to “US Matthew”, it’ll reset to UK Brian.
2) Doesn’t show any audio on some posts. Even if select voice (this time voice stays), but no audio generated, even with S3 turned on.
MAIN CONCERN IS #1 above. One should be able to change voice PER POST, but it simply resets to the first voice.

The neural voices are very cool. And a free million characters per month for a year is great. Altogether, quite affordable, even once trial expires. App is a bit buggy tho. I was running it and got a “fatal error” e-mail and was told to contact my host.
As it turns out, everything seemed fine. No issues during or after. Still alarming.
Also, app was a buggy at times where it would mess up the text-to-voice after updating a post (make it shorter or longer or not start at the beginning). It worked by unchecking it, saving, then rechecking it, but then I’m sure that went against my character count.. Weird.
The bulk edit also doesn’t work (they turned it off evidently). That’s probably better given the occasional bugginess (don’t want to rack up a big bill). But that would have saved me a lot of time..
It reads the alt text of images.. I didn’t like that and not sure how to turn it off.
In addition, there is no option to keep it from regenerating a complete audio file after every little edit. Sometimes, we want to change grammar here and there, or make a small revision, without paying for a completely new page. There should be the option to disable “updates on scheduling.”
Lastly, on mobile, there should be the option to playback faster. This option only shows on Desktop. Most we traffic is mobile, and people value being able to speed playback.
Overall, pretty awesome technology. App far from perfect, though.

Typical Amazon cleverness, let down by their inability to communicate. Turning on plugin causes fatal errors, no clue as to how to fix or any documentation on exact php modules or setup required. I tried for a couple of hours and gave up.
PHP Fatal error: Uncaught Error: Call to undefined method GuzzleHttp\Promise\Coroutine::of() in /var/www/html/wp-content/plugins/amazon-polly/vendor/guzzlehttp/promises/src/functions.php:362

I have set up the plugin on my website, after setting up the Access Key and Secret Access Key, it displays the Blank screen for CDN, I am using the latest WordPress and PHP 7.2 version.
Also, I have tried this on the default WordPress without adding any plugins, but still, it shows me the blank screen.
Could you please check and resolved this asap?
Thanks.

Installed in WP 5.4.1
It fails when trying to set up CDN side of things.
It claims to generate a certificate, gives you the DNS settings to set up.
Set those up (in Route53).
Verify they are exactly as instructed.
Click to get it to verify and continue setup, and it gets errors 400 every single time and cannot retrieve the certificate it set up.
Spent a day removing and regenerating several times, EVERY time it fails.
Which is a shame, because without that, it’s useless alas.

After spending easily 20 hrs on trying to activate this plugin and meticulously re-doing the AWS setup instructions multiple times absolutely nothing works. All efforts to enable functionality generate the message “Verify that your AWS credentials are accurate”. They are accurate.
I am using the latest version of the plugin and WP 5.4.1. Is there a fatal incompatibility between this plugin and WP 5.4.1?
On the AWS General tab, saving the AWS secret key causes it to be truncated to about half its length. The instructions were unclear on whether to use Ohio or N Virginia as the region. Neither region works.
There is security overkill on this plugin that defies comprehension. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to untie this unbelievable gordian knot?
This would be a dynamite plugin if it only worked. It looks like this plugin is a badly under-resourced project that is thereby guaranteed to fail. It would be well worth it to Amazon to clean up its act and do what it takes to make the pieces fit together and work. If Amazon is in business to make money, it does not show in the management of this project.

The idea of the plugin is great and it’s too basic to be used properly on a blog.
The fact is he plugin is not compatible with ssml (only break tag), so you cannot customize the created voice.
In addition, the voice is created with all the elements of the post (images, widget…), so if you post is illustrated with images, quotes… the audio file created by the plugin is bad…
I hope AMAZON will improve seriously this plugin.

Thanks to AWS developers for this application. It is a wonder for the sight impaired and brings content to life.
I’m looking forward to exploring the podcast feature next.

Once the plug-in is installed, then it’s an absolute breeze to use, but getting it initially set up to an absolute bloomin’ nightmare.
[How to obtain AWS Access Key and Secret Key?]
Guys, I’ve no flippin idea how I managed to get my AWS access key, that then led to the AWS secret key: because your detailed instructions, don’t actually match the very messy and confusing AWS dashboard.
(It’s all geared up to service mega companies.)
Poking and plodding I eventually got it, but I’ve still no idea how.
[the Review.]
Anyone who wants to enable TXT 2 SPEECH on their WordPress web-site: then this really is the absolute bees-knees to use, and Yes! – It’s gonna’ cost you ($4 dollars per 1 million characters.) But not for the first year, because for the first year after you’ve got your Amazon AWS account — it’s technically free!
(Subject to fair use, 5 million characters a month.)
Plus: you also get some off-line storage for your MP3 files, and some other stuff that frankly I’m at a loss to explain.
(Corporate stuff again.)
The voices available really are something else! – IVONA voices, .. wonderfully natural sounding, but what I find as amazing; is that they aren’t even the expensive offerings, offerings that do in fact cost a lot more.
This plug-in really is neat: I’ve got HTML5 Audio players on every Page and every Blog offering: all done automatically — and you can switch them (off) at any time.
I’m not live, but working on a local server to write and test out a new theme: and the thing even works in this insecure environment.
I simply cannot recommend this plug-in enough, but I simply cannot recommend the process of trawling through the Amazon S3 servers.
Hope it helps, .. Jessica.

Below is my original review.
Now I just want to ADD for anyone interested in this amazing plugin (that I encountered only coincidentally!) what cost to expect
– for polly text to speech
– for polly translations
1) You know from Tomasz’ plugin description that NEW aws customers don’t pay anything in the first 12 months.
2) Now I can ADD: I just received the first invoice AFTER using polly, and it seems even EXISTING aws customers like myself benefit from the 12 months FREE:
– My text to speech charges: 0
– My translation charges: 0
??
Meaning: Apparently AWS interpretes the “for new customers” rule as: New to POLLY. ??
This wasn’t anywhere clear from the amazon product description nor from the plugin docu, hence why I felt I should add this useful info here.
[So guess what? Now I am going to MASSIVELY turn all wordpress articles and even my books into SPEECH. Free podcasts too, yeah! Life is becoming good. ?? You didn’t send me the $4 anyway…]
Original Review:
So I have been testing this new plugin a bit already, and it is nothing short of amazing!
Like others said, amazon polly plugin, or since its renaming, amazon ai plugin, delivers SUCH unheard of speech quality that you need to hear it to imagine it.
And the author, Tomasz, has been SO HELPFUL when initially I couldn’t figure out why it didn’t work with my decade old aws account. The fix was easy when the author linked me to an amazon help page (Tomasz, add that to the plugin description, I am not the only noob here).
The plugin can also translate, but that I haven’t tested yet. And here the gist WHY:
– According amazon aws pricing guidance, “new aws subscribers” get 12 months * 1 million characters free text to speech, or translation, don’t remember. But I am not new, and have no money. So before I use this plugin intensely I want to see if I am being charged. If not, and I get 12 month free too, I gonna use this MASSIVELY right away. Else, as pocket money allows. LOL
Hint: 1 million characters cost $4 it says.
Got $4 for me?

Setting up the Text-to-Speech and the Translation features were straightforward and ‘very cool’. A couple of issues:
1) The translation process did not handle standard HTML tags (<h3> etc.).
2) I can’t get the PollyCast feature to generate the XML. I just checked and even the expected directories /feed/amazon-pollycast/ had not been created. It’s not clear what is going wrong as there are no error messages.
Once these get resolved, this has A LOT of promise!
Thanks,
-Chip

I’m interested in the post translator and it works pretty good, the problem is there is no control over translated posts. For example, it’s impossible to edit the translations and fix grammar errors after.

A simple to use but powerful plugin that brings the amazing capabilities of Amazon Polly into WordPress. Not only can you generate a text-to-speech version of posts in any post type, but they can be automatically fed into a podcast for your audience. Amazing! The developer is very responsive as well. Thanks for excellent work here!

A really good plugin. It just works.
One change I’d like to see in the plugin itself, is when you have flags or labels to link to the translated pages, that the original language flag/label (in our case the UK flag), links back to the actual real post URL – for example – it should link back to
example.com/123/my-post-name and NOT
example.com/123/my-post-name/?amazonai-language=en

This plugin has saved us a massive amount of time in putting together our own standalone app for producing audio versions of various content types, not just our WP articles. Just a couple of issues though – the main one being that I can only get it to run in the classic editor; it doesn’t seem to work in the forthcoming Gutenberg editor (the option’s there, but nothing gets created). The second is just a ‘it would be nice if…’ feature request to allow a ‘voice’ selection per post, or per ‘author’. This can be done via the metadata following creation, but it would be nice to have the option available prior to saving. Still worth 5 stars though!

I always wanted to have podcasts on my website, but having to record them and then edit them was a pain. Installing this plugin allows my blogs to just become podcast episodes… What a pleasure! (and British Amy’s voice is great)
Thanks to the developers for such an easy but brilliant solution!
PS: Any chance of a link or direct feed to an Axela skill…?

Easy to set up if you already have S3 keys, otherwise these days it’s a lot more daunting to do that. I tried it with Divi Theme (also page builder). It doesn’t work at all as it reads all the Divi short codes, which is why the devs should consider begin and end shortcodes so it only reads the text between. Great idea, and works well otherwise. The reader itself was tested on the Welsh Language and worked very well. It would be a great asset for video voice over if you do that kind of work…
