Hi,
A couple of times, on two different WP installs, I have made a post containing a single jpg image before the “more” tag. This image is the first bit of media in the post, and the one I want pushed out. But when the post has pushed through to fedi, the attachment has been an audio or video attachment from further down the post. In the settings, I have the number of media attachments set to “1”. (The new fediverse preview feature does not show any attached media.)
Examples:
OGP @[email protected]
TLMB @thevoidtlmb@tlmb.net
TLMB ^
So, it seems like the choice of media attachment is prioritising A/V items over images, rather than the first item(s) in the post (which is what it should be, IMO).
Is there (or can there be) any way of specifying which media item(s) should be attached? Either by type, or by order of appearance in the post.
Thanks.
(P.S. Off-topic: I noticed in Settings>”Supported post types”, you have “Posts” listed twice. That seems confusing.)
In V4.2.1 > Backend-Menü Einstellungen > ActivityPub > Einstellungen | Aktivit?ten
Activity-Objekttyp sollte wahrscheinlich “Notiz” hei?en, und nicht “Hinweis”, oder?
Every time I save a post on WordPress, random hex codes get attached as tags. This issue is occurring on two different sites. Recently, one of the sites started adding about 30 tags at once when I publish a post or save it. The issue appears to be related to the ActivityPub plugin as deactivating it solved it.
I had the issue with the other site for about a year but it was less bothersome.
I can see my above blog post on Mastodon, but the image block says not available. However, the image posted to my media gallery shows in Mastodon as it own toot and the image shows correctly. Don’t know if that is a setting in ActivityPub or some other issue.
I’m baaack! ?? I asked a while ago about cleaning up old posts. I’ve finally posted a new ep of the podcast, and the template is still not applying, so I think the template part of my situation is less a problem with authors on old posts and something wonky with the settings/config.
I’d love to be taught how to fish on this one: if there are errors applying a template, should I see logs somewhere? If there is a problem applying a template, will it fall back to a default excerpt?
Here are the details:

Before the Future Came is a podcast that looks at the ideals of Star Trek as we voyage from one episode or film to the next, following a breadcrumb trail of motifs.

So… how I diagnose this problem? And what are some possible places to look for issues?
Thanks in advance!
First up, thanks for this plugin. It works well enough, but I’d like to exclude the image captions when posting to AP clients like Mastodon. I see there is an option to “apply_filters”, but can’t figure out the full syntax, nor the correct keyword to use for the caption extracted from the media description.
Is there somewhere I can find samples of how to correctly enter this into the custom template field?
Thanks!

For FediTest purposes, how can I get it to do this 1) immediately and 2) predictably so we know whether the message sending worked or failed?
I recently moved a blog from wordpress.com, where the activitypub plugin worked perfectly, to self hosting (Amazon Lightsail). I’ve been trying to get ActivityPub working, but so far no luck. Posts don’t show up in Mastodon, follows of the profile (still there from when the blog was on wordpress.com) get “pending” and they don’t show any new posts.
I’ve determined that wp-cron is running. I’ve checked webfinger for swduncan.com/author/swduncan and it’s ok, site health shows no issues.
So I check the access logs and find “POST /wp-json/activitypub/1.0/actors/270596/inbox HTTP/1.1” 404, and I’m assuming that’s not good. Any idea what’s broken and/or how to fix?
Thanks!
Hi, I made a WP post, labelled with various tags, e.g. #YoYoCollection, but when AP sent the post through to Mastodon, the capitals in the hash tags were gone. e.g. -> #yoyocollection. (In case it’s relevant: I have left the “Add hashtags in the content as native tags and replace the #tag
with the tag link.” option unticked.) Whenever I post directly in Mastodon, my tags’ TitleCase is retained. (Example)
Is there any way for the tags to be pushed through whilst retaining their capitalisation, please? It’s good for those using screen-readers, and generally for readability.
(Come to that, I’d much prefer to keep the capitals in my account handles, but that’s another kettle of fish…)
Thanks,

Hi,
For a project, I would like to add 1-2 individual hashtags in addition to the hashtags generated via [ap_hashtags]
and [ap_hashcats]
. I’ve tried a bit in the content field, but can’t find a solution.
This is currently in the content field:
[ap_hashtags] [ap_hashcats] #customhash
#customhash
arrives in the Fediverse, but is never linked – so nobody is informed about it.
How would that be possible?
I would also be open to a PHP solution, but when looking through the plugin I have not yet found a way to add such tags myself – or I am missing something.
Hi everyone! I’ve been using the ActivityPub plugin to great effect for months, but have noticed a small annoyance: users who comment by replying to blog posts on Mastodon always have to be manually approved, irrespective of having previous approved comments.
I have the setting “Comment author must have a previously approved comment to appear” checked in the Comments settings section, and therefore the expected behavior is to have repeat commenters to have their comments automatically approved.
Might I have some other setting wrong? Thank you very much for your help!

You’ll know the page I need help with, it’s Annettes interview with you ??
The post showed up in Mastodon alright, but I replied in a Mastodon-client (Ivory) and that comment does not show up on the website. It should, shouldn’t it?
Then I tried it the other way round and posted a comment in WordPress with the comment form at the bottom of the blog post, and that showed up twice in Mastodon:
I have deleted that comment, but if you comment on the page may be it happens again.
Any idea as to what might be the cause of this? Is it perhaps related to the hosting?
Question: Does this plugin allow me to add nested comments to the bottom of my wordpress blog posts?
I’m looking for a solution to add comments to the bottom of my wordpress posts. Besides the built-in wordpress comments, I’ve commonly seen this done with third-party services, such as with:
Neither of these allow users to make comments from their fav federated instance using ActivityPub. Lemmy, however, has the best UX I’ve seen for long, nested, threaded comments on the ActivityPub fediverse. Here’s an example:
I’ve seen that this plugin can be used to add federated comments from the fediverse to the comments section of a wordpress post (example), but I haven’t seen reddit-style nested comments with upvotes and downvotes like we have on lemmy.
Is it possible to use this wordpress plugin with lemmy posts, such that:
If it *is* possible to use this plugin to add “nested comments from the fediverse” to the bottom of my blog post, please link me to an example that shows this in-action.
I have a WP blog that I haven’t installed AP on yet. I commonly make posts on it with a short bit of text, then the
tag, to click for the full article. In one of my other blogs with AP installed, I use a Custom Post content code of < strong > [ap_title] < /strong >
[ ap_excerpt length="200" ]
< a href= " [ap_permalink] " > [ ap_permalink ] < /a >
(spaces added to get it to paste in here okay), and that works just as I’d like it to. (Thanks! ?? )
My question is: If my “more” tag comes after (in the example above, say,) 100 characters, will AP limit the ap_excerpt to just the characters before the more tag? (Which is the behaviour I’d like.) If not, is there a way to do that in the custom code?
(Use case: I often have puzzle spoilers after the “more”, so I’d like to be sure those would not get pushed out, but for them to be just one click away from a fediverse post. )
Thanks.
I set up AP last year, but just now saw that the plugin had published to my blog’s federated Mastodon account a post-in-progress that I had set to “private.” My standard post-writing workflow is to set up the page in WP, create the page title, set visibility to “private” and then continue on to edit in Elementor.
But that post was FULLY VISIBLE on the Mastodon account for the last couple weeks I’ve been working on it. Now, there was nothing damaging, per se, just a mass of all my notes, streams of consciousness, late-night thoughts, and material copy/pasted from a word processor in random order in text blocks to be organized later. Still, I don’t want to have the whole internet or even the 11 people who followed my blog shuffling through all the notes and random papers on my desk either.
I’ve since set the post to “password protected” status and now only the header image from the Elementor layout is shown on the Mastodon account, which I don’t really want to draw any more attention to, but can send a link privately if you want.
Separate but related: In going through the settings, I see I’d set the plugin to upload images, but I didn’t realize that meant it would be uploading every image as I uploaded it to the post in question — even though the post was set to “private.”
So now I want to delete the whole mess, but from reading forums here and elsewhere, it seems that’s not possible yet. I did try deleting as much info as I could, but the bio and name, etc. on the account still shows up on the Mastodon profile page. Maybe it just hasn’t propagated yet. It also shows followers I deleted, but doesn’t show my own Mastodon account that I kept as a follower to monitor it. I’m deactivating the plugin and will see what happens in a day or two.
So, unless you’ve come up with a way to make the whole account go away, I guess I only want to make you aware that it published a “private” post, including images.
In the meantime, I love the idea of federating blogs, but this has a very, very long way to go before it’s functional for anyone but a very experienced developer. It was a nice try and in the long run, no real damage done. I’ll check back in a year or two.
Im getting this notice in the log’s
Non fatal error triggered on: https://****.com/2017/12/13/games-are-going-ahead/ Array
(
[type] => 2
[message] => Trying to access array offset on value of type null
[file] => /*******/public_html/wp-content/plugins/activitypub/includes/class-comment.php

)
I suggest line 376 should instead be:
} elseif ( ! empty( $comment_meta[‘source_id’][0]) && $fallback ) {
Hi!
I think I set up everything correctly, but the blog profile won’t post anything. After a while, I tried activating authors’ profiles, and those worked fine. The blog profile started boosting those posts as expected. But then I deactivated authors’ profiles (I’m not interested in working that way), and it stopped posting again.
I read on the documentation that “The blog-wide profile is only compatible with sites with rewrite rules enabled”, but I don’t know if that refers to WordPress (how?), the server… What should I look into in order to solve this?
Thanks!
Here’s an odd one. I had this plugin working well for my podcast last year, but had to take a bit of a hiatus from handling social media. In the intervening time, some cool updates came through, like the ability to disable author profiles. The podcast only had one mastodon follower (me!) and I’d only boosted and liked a couple of the earliest posts.
I quickly realized that any posts since I last pulled one were busted: the blog’s account wasn’t boosting new author posts (we had just released an episode) and my blog-wide custom template wasn’t applying. I disabled the author profiles, then updated a post I’d previously touched in mastodon and resaved it so it would hopefully be update to use the main acct and the main template.
When I search for that URL on my Mastodon instance now, I get an error: 422 Validation failed: Uri has already been taken
. This makes a certain sense to me, even without understanding the specifics of ActivityPub. My instance is having trouble updating the actor or author or whatever AP calls it for that status. That said, is this a fixable problem? I admin my own Mastodon instance, but unfortunately, Mastodon doesn’t make it easy to remove/purge a single remote status.
Second, posts really don’t want to update to use my custom template, which is a bit baffling. My template is:
[ap_title]
Before the Future Came is a podcast that looks at the ideals of Star Trek as we voyage from one episode or film to the next, following a breadcrumb trail of motifs. How is the universe portrayed in Star Trek a truly egalitarian utopia, and how does the world subtly uphold the hegemonic values of our present day?
[ap_permalink]
[ap_hashtags]
I then went to an old post and updated the content with an extraneous space or extra period. When I look at https://beforethefuture.space/podcast/s00e00-welcome-and-programming-note/?activitypub, I see that the excerpt’s content changed with that new space or period, but it still has all the standard WP excerpt stuff it from the Seriously Simple Podcasting format instead of using my AP template.
I guess my broader question is: should I expect to be able to clean up my old content in these ways? If so, should I be enabling WP’s debug logs to see if applying the template is erroring out?
I’ve been trying the ActivityPub today but ran into an issue, Mastodon would not find my profile or my posts. So I took some time to figure out what was going on, since the Diagnostics page told me that the webfinger endpoint was not reachable.
In the end I found this thread right here and it all clicked (and worked). So I’m posting all my findings on this thread in hopes it help more people.
Hope that helps!
Hello!!
I would really like to use ActivityPub, Webfinger, Friends, etc. (EDIT: it’s a new site and no plugins besides those)
I tried every solution linked here in the support forums, or on the GitHub repository.
I even tried the “alternative if we cannot access the /.well-known folder” (it’s out of the site patch, but it’s my server so I can access, but well), such as this post and this ticket (#188 on GitHub)
I tried every rule I found for .htaccess, and as I’m on a Apache + Nginx hybrid (on a cloud server, via Runcloud), I even tried adding the Nginx conf I found in this old ticket
About Nginx I also tried what’s in this gist
I keep getting a 403 forbidden error :/
I also contacted RunCloud support, but I guess it’s out of their scope of support.
Thanks in advance for your help
The first comments were fine, but starting with Carolina K?hn at 19:19 (written in Mastodon) the comments were assigned to the “Startseite” (ID 3638) instead of the post (ID 6703).
I have manually corrected the Post ID in the database, that’s why they appear where they belong, but would could be the reason for this behaviour?
Hi,
My site had been federating properly until recently. The last post, published on 8/7 did not appear and neither has a header image added at the same time in Blog-Profile. During the time since the previous post was published, I’ve changed hosting companies but the site settings have not changed. WordFence and Litespeed Cache are installed. Is there a way to test whether ActivityPub is being blocked?
Thanks.
I guess I’m not set up as I am not seeing my post appear as I hoped. I see an older post and a much older one, from months ago on this profile above. Both were made before the plugin was installed and activated.
I made a post 2 days ago, but it has not appeared. I guess I am not set up correctly.
Is there something obvious I am missing?

Hi,
I have a website, and a WordPress install on it in a subfolder. I’m hosted on Dreamhost.
I installed ActivityPub and set it up okay, but can’t find the account @[email protected] via Mastodon.
I installed webfinger. Site Health shows an error: “WebFinger endpoint is not accessible”.
My site has a /.well-known/ folder in the root. There is no /.well-known/ folder in the subfolder (the root of the WP install).
I’ve searched and read quite a few threads around this problems, but I’ve found it confusing, and I don’t know if it’s a problem with .well-known, or with Dreamhost, or with .htaccess or some combination or something else. (I also don’t know if this should be in the ActivityPub forum or the Webfinger forum. Apologies it’s in the wrong place.)
I have another site (entirely different URL), also on Dreamhost, with a WP which is hosted on a subdomain, and ActivityPub (without webfinger) gets that one on to the fediverse fine.
Given that I don’t want to move the problem WP to a subdomain, but leave it in its subfolder, can you please advise how to get this WP to appear on the fediverse?
Thanks.
I recently installed and activated AcivityPub on my website.
I can see the instance on mastodon.social .
The blog avator and header images appear and change if I make a changes on my website but my new blog posts don’t appear.
On the instance, I can see that there are 101 “Older posts from other servers are not displayed.” and the number of posts are up from the 89 when I started this process a few weeks ago but can’t see any of the new posts that I have created since I installed ActivityPub. I’ve been following since I set it up.
Here’s what I have done to try to troubleshoot:
check WordPress Site Health: no errors related to ActivityPub
Installed, and updated the AcitvityPub Plugin
Deactivated Plugin, waited
reactivated plugin, waited
created new posts and waited
Help?
I’ve set up ActivityPub and I am able to follow the user on my mastodon account. I am able to see the count of existing posts on the profile but when I publish new posts the new posts never show up and I have been unable to find any solutions so far in the forums. (I see lots of instances of people closing similar requests with “It’s working now” but explanation as to what might have changed.)
Hello, I have an issue with ActivityPub plugin version 3.0 -latest build-.
From its settings, I have set up “note” as format and from “activity” settings, I mean the template, I selected “custom” and did as follow:
[ap_title]
[ap_excerpt length="400"]
[ap_shortlink type="html"]
But going to @network@plusbrothers.net (the blog’s profile) from a Mastodon/fediverse instance, I see it with “its “customized” template’s default settings, such as:

[ap_title]
[ap_content][ap_hashtags][ap_shortlink]
is it depending on the line breaks in the textarea? Should be those shortcodes attached one another? Such as [ap_title][ap_excerpt length=”400″][ap_shortlink type=”html”]?
Thanks.
hello.
I had set up my web server right this time, with help of my friend.
but my blog stil doesn’t federate
Hi there,
This sounds like an excellent plugin to connect my blog with the Fediverse. I currently have a profile on zeroes.ca, so this would, I imagine, be a second one, from what I think I understand.
I currently send my blog post subscribers an email when I publish a post, using Subscribe2 plugin. Would this new plugin or functionality affect this at all? Would my subscribers still get their emails?
I also currently have my blog posts publish directly to my zeroes.ca profile, using the plugin Share On Mastodon. Would this be redundant, if I am using this plugin?
I have a setting for comments that restricts comments from showing unless approved or from someone with a previously approved one. How would this work, with comments coming in from the Fediverse?
I am not familiar with code etc., just a photographer who writes and enjoys sharing, just want to make sure I don’t break anything!
Thanks,
Ellie
