I just went through the upgrade to 2.7.1 and something – somewhere – screwed the pooch. I can’t post anything. I can’t activate or deactivate any plugins. I can’t edit posts. I can’t change anything in my settings.

I can’t even log out! The freakin’ thing won’t even let me log out. “Are you sure you want to do that?” – Yes!!!! – sorry –

AND – now I’m getting a relentless series of blank comments being sent to me via email for me to approve. My site is sending me comments. Like it’s taunting me or something.

I followed all the instructions for the upgrade. I did it again with all the plugins and themes removed except for the defaults. What the hell happened?! Did I mess up my database or something? Is there a way to kick this thing in the head and make it come to its senses? I’ve seen similar posts here from folks with similar problems but all the solutions offered I’ve tried already and it still won’t work.

    Someone please help.

Not sure what happened, but if you want to contact me with a login to your hosting account I’ll take a look….my email is 234figaro432 [at] gmail [dot] com

Otherwise, you may be able to find something that helps in one of my videos here: https://educhalk.org/blog/

    Oh brother!

I had a look at your videos – particularly the one on BigDump – great stuff! So good in fact I thought I’d try to solve my problems by restoring the MySQL database, which I had carefully backedup. The transfer hung, like you described in your video but not because of the same problem – it had something to do with the MySQL syntax (which is waaaaay beyond my capability of understanding) – but I thought I’d have a look in the .sql file just to see what was going on.

My God – about 90% of the content is spamspamspamspamspam! Massive amounts of stuff. Is it possible to safely extricate this garbage out of there. I hate the idea of losing my comments, let alone having to start the whole blog all over again.

    My brain hurts.

I’m not gonna mess with anything else until I hear back from you but ohhhh man – what a painfully disappointing day this has been.

    cheers

That’s why you need a good spam filter like Askimet enabled and then login every now and then and delete the SPAM comments. You could import everything except for the comments table entries and see if you can get things working again. If so, then you could delete out the spam comments and import the rest into the empty comments table.

Thanks for your attention to this but I finally figured out what the problem is:

My carefully backed up database was only a portion of what was supposed to be there – basically just the comments table, laden with spam – and all else from the MySQL database has been scattered to the internet winds.

Excuse me whilst I go pound my head against the wall for a while.

Next few weeks will be spent going through Google cache and archive.org’s Wayback Machine in an effort to reconstruct at least some of what used to be there over the past 2 years..

    Yoicks!

    … where’s that wall?
