I was trying to add a SSL Certificate image to my site. I was told to go to appearance>editor>header.php and add html they provided.

I also had to add html to the footer.php

After pressing update, it was unsuccessful i saw and I saw a error message saying this cant be done If I wanted to make the change I would have to do it through FTP.

I then went to look at my website and all the theme elemenets have been erased. the content in my website is still there but the theme isnt.

I am not a coder and have little knowledge on HTML and it was probably a bad decision to try edit any PHP file.

I would like to refer back to what it was before, is this possible. all help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

Do you have a backup of those two files? If not, download a new copy of your theme, unzip locally, and upload via FTP to replace the existing files.

You should NOT edit .php files to insert images; there are better methods. In any case, if you have a good SSL cert and padlock, no one cares if you display a “This site is secured” image, IMHO.

What you see on your site is due to a broken header.php and/or footer.php file.

Hi thanks for getting back so quickly Steve.

unfortunately I didn’t do a backup of the files.

how do i download a new copy of the theme, I am setting up file zilla now to use as a FTP.

much appreciated for making me aware of the problem. will I be able to have the website as it was? or will i have to change things manually to get back to scratch???

thank you steve… can I upload the files via cp file manager rather than FTP, I am struggling to connect it to the directory of my choice. It keeps connecting me to an empty folder.

You can upload either FTP or Filamaneger.

And upload this theme /wp-content/themes directory

Simple near to fix this issue
