MORE THAN A FEW BUGS – LIMITED SUPPORT
-
NOTE – just updated to UM 2.0. The following comments are valid for this latest version.
THE GOOD
Overall, this is a very comprehensive plugin – clearly, the designers were thinking big picture:
– solid foundation for any member-based site.
– access controls implemented across most WP objects (menus, pages, posts, popups)
– most functions are highly paramterized, so customization is minimal
– generally, robust, complete functionality
– generally, theme friendly (at least, for Artbees Jupiter)THE NOT SO GOOD
– support for the freemium product is …a little spotty. Depending on your expectations, I’ve got open topics that are 4+ days old.
– as I roll out this plugin in a prod envronment, I’m running into more bugs than I expected (see partial list below)
– login prcess flow is quirky (see below)OUTSANDING ISSUES
– Conditional Menus don’t quite work – if you are logged in and nav to the WP home page, the UM conditional menus suddenly think you’re not logged in…very confusing to users. The only workaround I’ve found is to create a clone of the home page: 1 version is assigned to WP Home Page in WP / Reading and the other is assigned to my main menu.– Display Field Names – only some of the field names work…notably, {username} does not.
– Quirky Login Logic – user navs to the UM Login page. Upon successful login, UM then directs usr to a special sub-form with 2 options: Update Account or Logout.
– Why would a user login and then logout?
– Most users login to view / use the site, not to maintain their account info. This may seem trivial, but given that one of the arguments for using UM is its robust access control, it’s really burdensome for users to be redirected from a “logged on users only” page, then login, then have to choose Update Account or Logout…
– Login / Update Account Forms – these functions are implemented as forms on pages. Generally a good thing (easy to format consistent with site standards), but…once a user updates his/her account…nothing happens! Pop-up login / update account functions normally auto-close, but because of the page implementation, that doesn’t happen.
Again, if you are using UM’s menu, page, post access controls, this looks really weird…you nav to a page, get redirected becaue you’re not logged in, you login, you have to nav to update account…then you just sit there!!!
I’ll gladly bump this plugin back up to 5 stars if they would just respond to some of these issues…
